Hello all!

I just recently went to my local EAA clubs monthly meeting. I enjoyed my visit and am interested in being a member. For those that are/have been a member of their local EAA, what should I expect from being a member as far as participating? Will I have to participate in events a certain amount each year? Or is it more or less just show up to the meetings and volunteering if I want?

Thanks.

Like most clubs, you get out what you put in. You can carry your EAA card and do nothing but read the magazine. Or you can go hog wild and do every committee and event. Somewhere in the middle is best :)

You don't HAVE to do anything at all. Our chapter has members who I have never seen at a meeting or any other event. I'm the secretary, newsletter editor and web editor. Others do more, like the YE coordinator. Everything that gets done is done by volunteers, so do what you want to do.

Yea I have no problem volunteering. But since I'm in flight school right now I don't want to be pressured to volunteer and also since I'm not yet a private pilot I'm not sure how much I'll be able to contribute at least when it comes to flying events.

Like others have mentioned, you can do as little or as much as you are comfortable with. I enjoy doing the young eagles, and club cook outs.

Don't worry... there's a TON of non-flying work involved in a Young Eagles event. Go have fun!

I volunteered to do the newsletter, and did do for four years. I worked with a sub-group building a Pietenpol (that took four years, too), and learned a lot about wood and fabric planes, and for my own building project, the knowledgeable other members helped me overcome building problems and helped me scrounge parts. I also used the club's book and tool library.

So I got a lot out of the organization and put some into it.

I never felt any pressure to do anything.

Every club or association has it's own personality and is different from others, it all depends on it's members. Some clubs are very active with lots of activities, some, not so much.
In most of the clubs I've been in, most of the work is done by about the same 10% of the members. All or most of us have family and jobs to worry about, those are priorities over club activities. Do what you can if your interested in helping out, even if its just helping out at the meetings while you are there, that's how you get to know people.
One thing you might do is write up a short article/photo for the newsletter about your training, or something along those lines. Newsletter editors are always crying out for articles from members.
