What not to say on a plane

you can't fix stupid

But... but... they were on a flight plan!

OK, then it was because the TSA has created such a culture of fear and prohibits the use of any word that might possibly sound like "bomb" anywhere in an airport. And asks that folks turn others in for saying something.

Apparantly they've never heard of the website www.kissthisguy.com ..

Guess the pilot is lucky that TSA didn't have him arrested.

Why did this even make the news?

Because the news outlet thought it was newsworthy.

It illustrates that the public is very skittish about terrorism, and that sometimes their fears turn out to be unwarranted, so I think it's useful for the public to hear about it.

For a few minutes their worst fear was realized ... that the capt & FO had hijacked their own plane.

I think that is BS. The only reason this became public is because a couple of ass clowns thought they could make a buck off the airline by raising hell about it after the fact. Then some news outlet picked it up because they thought they could put a sensational spin on it.

You musunderstood me. I am making no claims about the motivations of either the complainers or the news people. I'm just saying that I think the story serves a useful purpose regardless of their motivations.

And this is different now vs. any other time in history in the "News" business, because? ;)

Not much difference in overall media principles, but the introduction of things like 'iReporters'....people with nothing better to do but tweet stupid stuff they see to the news office has really brought things down to a new level of stoopid.

I think Tom Petty summed up Twitter the best - "the problem with Twitter is that everybody has their head up their own ass...."

Witness the case this week of the 1% tip story that CNN was carrying....all from reading an obscure blog somewhere. They were about to organize a lynch mob to go find the supposed cheapskate investment banker and then two days later they found out they had been duped....total hoax.

The media has always been on the hunt for sensational stories, but in the current technology age, I think the quality contol has gone completely out the window....and don't even get me started on the quality of news editing these days...

Got ya

It's a crazy world that is getting crazier by the day. "Zero tolerance", along with "Manufactured fear", is who we now are. So much for the "Great Society" and "No Child Left Behind". They've now all been left behind, and there ain't nothing great about our society. We've become a nation of fat idiots.

This thought is one I truly hope I am completely wrong about.

Please don't tell my girlfriend that I said this. She doesn't think these words are part of my vocabulary. "You're right....."

That's all ok that they went bonkers over mom. As you can see in the photograph that goes with the story, the other SW airplane landed on that one and everyone was killed.

In tomorrow's news all the terrorists in this country will be locked up. Parents need not to waste gas going to pick their terrorist children up from school. The doors will be welded shut and crayons will be confiscated since they can be used to set fire to each other.

A buddy whose job is to fly around the country and help clients install ERP systems tells this story. BTW, this guy is of Indian descent, talks with a funny accent, and has a decidely non-Western name.

So he's sitting at a table in the concourse waiting on his connecting flight. He pulls out his laptop, fires up his mobile phone and bluetooth and calls the office. The discusion centers around a Bill Of Materials, breaking that BOM down into component pieces, exploding the BOM, etc.

A few minutes into his call, security interrupts him, and he gets to spend the next 30 minutes explaining that a BOM isn't a Bomb, exploding a BOM is a normal business function, and convincing them that he's an consultant of Indian descent, not an airport bomber...

We are becoming so wound up I predict heart attack and stroke rates will skyrocket in the not-too-distant future.
Would saying "skyrocket" while waiting on a flight at the gate ring all those bells?
