Is it a butterfly or moth?

I'm not sure. I made the mistake of texting it to my granddaughter, and now I have to find out what it is because she still thinks I know everything.

It's not clear from the photos.
Butterflies lite with their wings erect...held vertically.

Moths lite with their winds flat...out to the side.

Coloration is similar, but I'm in New York... that would be kind of cool, though.

Could be this one, too. Same taxonomic family, but found in North America.

Maybe not same exact species but looks pretty similar![]()
I agree. That's what I'm telling her it is: A Great Spangled Fritillary. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. The illusion of my great wisdom has survived for another day.
Great Spangled Fritillary... sounds like something you'd order in a Tex-Mex place...

Yep, amazing the passengers you pick up at sea during and after big storms, butterfly and birds.

Two to go please!
I was always amazed by this when I was in the Navy. There would be shore birds 100 miles from land. Had flying fish land on the ship also.
No illusion Rich. Anyone that takes the time to notice the beauty around us is very wise indeed. Thanks for posting.
