logbook, aircraft configurations, etc....
do they wipe the data if the subscription lapses?

No data is lost, it’s all uploaded to flygarmin account so it can be shared among devices.

You do not need a Gamin Pilot subscription to maintain a web account (including Logbook and such) at fly.garmin.com. If you do have a subscription you can link it to the account by using the same login in the app as you do for the web account.

Probably the more important question is — do you have backups?

They’re far more likely to screw up and lose data by accident than tick off customers by deleting it on purpose.

“The cloud is just someone else’s computer...” as we say in the IT biz. Especially when analyzing business and data continuity...

Do they have backups? Probably. But if they screw up multiple layers deep... have your own.

It is not obvious, but there is a function in the Garmin logbook to "Save a file that contains a perfect copy of your logbook, including log entries, endorsements, aircraft types, and signatures." There is also "The Import and Export feature allows you to transfer log entries and aircraft types back and forth from a spreadsheet. Use this to keep another copy of the data or to help move your logbook between different software."

Both of these functions are found at the bottom of the Logbook Setup screen.
