What Facebook knows (and sells) about you

Russian mob?

Tin Foil strong. It is also partnered with Jewish bankers on Wall Street..... And Baptists in Alabama, Methodists in Texas, Mormons in Utah, and Atheists in California.

Oh, my.

You are either an idiot, ignorant of the facts, or a FB shareholder. Let's hope for ignorant. Every intelligence agency on the face of the earth knows that DST is a front company for the Bratva.

So, how many shares in FB do you own?

-Rich

No idea. Would have to spend some time going thru holding statements of various funds I own.

What does my investment allocation have to do with your Tin Foil?

Dunno?

And what does that have to do with anything?

Do they own more or less than Goldman?

More or less than Fidelity?

I have no idea what their position is now. I do know that Zuckerberg leaped into bed with Milner and DST before his company even went public. How can anyone trust his company with their personal information after he sold his soul to the Bratva?

That, sir, is the point. The company is run by a scumbag.

Very few companies aren't run by scumbags. And the answer to all the data gathering companies is to feed them disinformation if you're worried about anything they collect. Even your posts can be disinformation if you so please.

Anyone who really cares will call ya and ask ya "WTF?" when you post beach photos when sitting at your desk at home.

Personally I post exciting stuff like photos of my dog being cute. Really can't avoid using social media when you (used to?) do a podcast.

You post stuff appropriate to be posted and don't post stuff that isn't, which isn't that hard to figure out.

Some folks worry about posting things like political rants, or whatever. I don't.

If some employer is so unprofessional as to care what my political persuasions are in their hiring process, or feel inclined to find out what I do outside of work, so they can judge it, I definitely don't want to work for them.

I've posted various personal crap on the Internet since long before places like FB existed. I've also refrained from posting some things for at least as long. Even things like phone numbers, there's ways to mitigate the "risks" of that.

I'm not going into detail, since my methods are mine. You must find your own bliss in this regard. And your own tolerance levels for various risks, just like anything else in life.

Strong to Very Strong on the Tinfoil Hats in this thread.

There is a big book that gets published every year with my Phone Number and my Address in it. And, most of my neighbors. Also has a bunch of Yellow Pages in the back that has similar information on local businesses.

If bored, you can go to the local library and pull up old copies of the local newspaper, and it will have my name and Date of Birth in it.

And, for a few pennies, somehow you can get a list of the vehicles I own from the State DMV.

The fact that Facebook knows I like the band Reckless Kelly is likely not a great security risk to me.

I got 99 problems, this ain't one of them.

Would you happily let the police search your car and home because you "have nothing to hide"?

Yes. http://www.theemployerhandbook.com/Largent.pdf

Here's a cut-and-paste from a set of Requests for Production we received last month from a big-name insurance defense firm on one of our personal injury cases ...

[EDIT FOR SPACE] etc...

One of the partners in our law firm was formerly an insurance defense attorney. Going to the claimants' FB page first thing was S.O.P. in his former practice, and for the insurance companies he worked for. They want to harvest whatever they can online as soon as possible, in case the claimant later starts deleting things.

Just because they say "please" doesn't mean you give it to them. You could reply "Please pound sand."

How is Facebook selling anonymous demographic info about me the same as cops searching my home?

Tin foil??

Typical.

It's the immature narcissistic ATTITUDE that since you and your ilk want your entire life to be an open book, you think that anyone who treasures privacy and non-interference by government is some sort of kook. The same attitude extends from voluntary abandonment of privacy in commercial activities to the voluntary relinquishment of rights protected by the Constitution, which becomes the prevailing reaction to encroachment and which does the country immense harm.

There's a big difference between voluntarily posting something on FB and allowing law enforcement to go on an armed fishing expedition in your living space.

How about we try to keep this out of Spin Zone?

How is Facebook (or Google) "selling" my "information" any different than Nielsen or CBS selling my information to their advertisers like Audi and Rolex? Or Fox News selling your "information" to the survivalist seed companies and the gold bullion/hoarding hawkers?

Yeah, I want my entire life to be an open book, I am guessing you have given POA nearly as much information as I have given Facebook. And Facebook has likely "sold" my information to their advertisers, DESPITE me NEVER clicking on an advertisement on Facebook. (I will confess to "liking" some aviation related companies, but I would guess they are poor returns on the investment for my attention.)

And, as for the tin-foil crazy fears about Zuckerberg and the Russian Mafia, I am sure it is safe to say that Zuckerberg has done more good than those making the accusations.

Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, were the most generous American philanthropists in 2013, with a donation of 18 million shares of Facebook stock, valued at more than $970 million, to a Silicon Valley nonprofit in December.
The Chronicle of Philanthropy reported Monday that Zuckerberg’s donation was the largest charitable gift on the public record in 2013 and put the young couple at the top of the magazine’s annual list of 50 most generous Americans in 2013.
