I'm new here and just wanted to highlight how well USA does aviation. I've flying all over Africa and while you see some interesting things there, ferrying especially is a bit of a nightmare with permissions, rules and red tape. I got the US 2 months ago, ferried a AStar from Portland to Beatrice (NE), flew a job there, ferried to Ely (NE) and been flying here for the past month and what a pleasure. We did experience our fair share of bad weather, but having so many refuelling option en route meant that we could change plans with zero hassle. The airport managers at Beatrice and Ely have also been super accommodating and great to work with.

Did they have to correct your pronunciation of Beatrice? I did a bunch of work up there at the ammonia plant. I ran a project to tear out the old control and protection system and put in a split SIS/DCS. It was a really great project. I learned how to pronounce BEE @ Tris.

Back to your post: Other than our overzealous TRF system, it does work pretty well.

They have no idea how oppressed they are. Freedom should be the norm, not the exception. Sadly, it isn't.

Having been there, yeah; they do. But for a lot, they live near the bottom of Maslow’s pyramid. I once counted six (6) VFR aircraft airborne in Tanzania at one time. That was a s busy as I ever saw it and four of those were shuttles over to Zanzibar.

I stopped overnight in Ely en route from Hayward (just east of San Francisco) to Boulder, C0 last fall. That airport manager is a gem- gave me keys to tge “courtesy car”- a white pine county pickup, overnight, so i could get to my hotel.
