My wife picked up the phone and said "Someone from Avis wants to talk to you about some rental you had in March."

Earlier this year we went to SunNFun. I had to be in Rochester NY on Sunday and had a board meeting in Lakeland Monday at noon, so it was too short a turn around to consider flying ourselves so we went commercial. I rented from Avis (I'm a long time Preferred customer there).

Well originally we were going to drive to Tampa drop the car off and check into the airport hotel for our early morning flight. But by the time we got there I said screw it, lets just go to the hotel and we'll drive to the airport in the morning. So rather than returning the car at 11PM I was returning it at 5:30 the next morning. This shouldn't have been a deal because the "full day" I'd paid for was good until like noon the next day. But I decided to alert Avis to the change in plans.

They immediately slapped me with a $10 "change fee." This is rediculous, if I'd just returned the car without telling them, I wouldn't have been subject to any fee. When I got home I wrote some emails off to Avis customer support and got a letter back saying essentially "Tough cookies" we're not refunding this not because it was stupid and not because we don't think we ought not to screw a frequent customer.

Anyhow, some CS guy was going through the files cleaning things out for the end of the year and found my message and the response and apparently couldn't believe the stupidity. They called up yesterday to profusely apologize and return my $10 (apparently with interest since they returned $12 instead).

A little late, but good customer service.

Well, certainly more sense than the airlines, but kudos to Avis for having common sense.

Sounds to me like you should have changed to a diff provider. I usually rent from Budget or Hertz and never had any issues.

Hertz too! (actually several of the companies have given me unreasonable grief)

"You returned the car after 5 hours instead of the full day that you rented it for; that's breaking the contract, sorry."
$221.00

I actually have been a Preferred Avis customer since they start I was the corporate travel officer for my little company (I was riding in the bus one day and I found a form to set up an account). I also have Hertz #1 Gold and National Emerald Preferred status. I usually shoot rate requests on each trip and pick the one that's cheapest.

Budget by the way *IS* Avis.

Amusingly when I rented my car in Kona in October in typical fashion the car was sitting there with my name on it and the keys in the ignition. We throw our bags in it and head for the exist (typically you show the contract which was in the car and your license). Thing was there wasn't anybody there. I guess you could have just hopped into any of the cars waiting for preferred customers and departed.

Actually, I've had otherwise pretty good Avis experience. I was weathered in at Norwood and kept extending my rental and they just switched it from the daily to weekly rental when I got over the threshold where it was cheaper.

No, that is the airline model.

This has taken a hilarious turn!
After I paid in full at time of service, they are now mailing me a bill for $69.xx without explanation or comment.
Unbelievable! Just trying to aggravate me because of this post, I guess. Either that or the emailed review they asked me to complete in which I explained in very mild language, my displeasure.
Sheesh.
Please.......general car-renting public: Do Not Rent From HERTZ!

Most companies don't do anything with those review forms. I've never had one answered no matter how low I rated it. Having been in corporate american, these are done to "PROVE WHAT A GREAT JOB WE'RE DOING" rather than to determine where they are falling down.

Haha!
I contacted them by email and was told that when a credit card charge is successfully disputed (Amex agreed with me and took 69$ from Hertz, credited my account 69$ recently), Hertz bills the customer for the amount that was successfully disputed!
Excuse me a moment while I remove all Hertz contacts from my phone, my bookmarks and to tell everyone I know how Hertz have jacked with me.
