Well, AMOC doesn't always strike-out

As with most of us here, I'm not a fan of DHS, AMOC, TSA or any of those jack-booted-thug agencies but even they don't strike out 100% of the time.

About, 18 months ago, when I was still managing our local airstrip, I was contacted by this young man. He wanted to talk about renting our last open hangar. So we met at the field.

His main concern was that our hangars don't have doors and weren't secure enough for him so he didn't rent the hangar and based his plane at Fredericktown instead, where I too now keep mine.

He was young, in his thirties, had something like 8 kids, and just bought a cherokee six. I couldn't help but to wonder how he could afford a cherokee six.

Now I know!

west plains mo pot bust

western distict of MO press release

I don't know how this slipped by for over 2 months without me knowing about it. The Fredericktown airport worker told me about it yesterday and said they found a stockpile of explosives in his hangar when they searched it a few days after the bust...though I don't see that mentioned anywhere else so that may have just been mouth running.

And, being the dog person I am, I loved this shot:

Did they say anything 'bout the long haired guy in the twin cessna who hauled dogs around as cover?

Every time you were talking to the guy DEA was listening in on the conversation. They were tracking those guys for two years, if someone sells that kind of tonnage several of their retailers are goverment informants with suspended prosecutions.

Yeah some pot is off the streets. We are all safer now, except for the millions of unfortunate people in legalish/decriminalizedish states.

Yep, and it was worth the millions spent plus the $40k a year it will cost to house each of them. What a freakin waste of resources especially when it will have zero impact on the industry as a whole.

Your story has not swayed my opinion of the jack-boot thuggery that is the US and most state govt agencies. So they stopped a few pounds of pot. Before the controlled substances act, this would have been a minor story about tax evasion, or maybe no story at all.

So, what we have is the govt making up a set of laws about victimless crime, hiring thousands of people, buying up thousands of arms, including mini-tanks, spending billions of taxpayer dollars to enforce made up laws about a product that was legal to own, and consume for almost two hundred years in this country until the feds got control of your ingesting some smoke.

OBTW, this is the SAME govt that has used citizens as test agents without their knowledge or consent for all kinds of nasty bugs, and chemicals over the years, including LSD, and worse.

They are still thugs, the govt is still out of control, and this bust is a waste of time and effort.

If you like dogs, as I do, this is also a sad waste of a nice family pet for someone.

Gotta love these gov't drug agency numbers.

$7,500 per lb!? Who were they selling it to the Queen of England?

The magic of 'street value' numbers inflation.

That's about right, maybe a little on the high side but not much...$468.75/oz is about what high grade pot goes for in the NYC.

That's a little higher than the posted after tax prices for marijuana in Colorado. I don't know what the actual prices are but some price gouging was reported during early sales.

As I understand it street prices are much lower than retail prices.

I could not agree more whole-heartedly.

Even a blind squirrel finds a nut occasionally - and

Even a broken [analog] clock is right twice a day - and

This had nothing to do with AMOC - they knew about the guy for months . . .

Edit - I just ran $175 through the US Inflation Calculator from 1980 and it comes out to $494.75 in 2013 dollars - so that $7500/lb is pretty much right on . . .

Well I like the dog picture.
It's nice the dog got credit instead of the officer that just held the leash.

Why don't they go bust some meth labs instead of going after dumb hippies

Here's an idea...

Whenever a Fed agency has a big pot bust like this, they should transport the seized pot to Colorado and sell it. That way the deficit will be erased in no time.

hmmm, 175 was about four times the going rate in 1980...(not that I know anything about it 'cause I was still in school and never touched the stuff).

Depends on how it's sold. By the pound it's worth between $1800- $2200, break it into grams and it's $10-$20 gram depending on quality, unless it has seeds in it, then it's much less.

This is not a 'big' bust by any stretch, 'big' involves tractor-trailers. What was seized there is about 2 bales as they are carried across the border. All the feds gout out of it were two lousy 2-count indictments and a '67 cherokee 6. The only thing of value they picked up was a 2009 John Deere tractor.

If this crap came across the southern border it's likely worth about $800lb.

I think quality had something to do with it . . . .

This is much more accurate. None of this $7,500 per lb business.

I actually like that idea, it will of course never happen (too practical), and they'll pay to incinerate it instead.

Some serious irony there, you can't have this because it is illegal(bad for you) here but if you move over here(keep your laws off my body) we will sell it to you. After we put the guy who had it in jail for a couple of decades. Sets up some perverse incentives for gov as well.

The "war" on drugs has never been about anything but enlarging size, power and scope of government, over riding civil rights and having huge amounts of money to skim from, for all sorts of "friends" of whatever crowd was in control at the time.

Such a pathetic commentary on the state of this government.

You'll notice in my original post I didn't "applaud" or even "condone" the bust...just stated the facts. I, too, think the war on drugs is idiotic.

And for those price debating. In 1980 one could buy good, seedless bud for $40 to $50 / oz in SWMO...not that I ever did mind you.

."To anger a conservative lie to him. To anger a liberal, tell him the truth." - Teddy Roosevelt

I'll bet Teddy never met Rush or Sean or BillO.
