My girlfriend just got prescribed Flexirol for some odd pain in her lower back today, and the pharmacist made a special point to talk to us about the prescription information. He said it seemed odd, and so did we, so I figured I'd ask the doctors here what you all think:

Take 1 pill, 3 times a day, then take 1 pill before bed. Then take 1 pill, 3 times a day.

That seems odd, no?

call your doctor. Sounds like a mistake and flexoral can be addicting. The pharmacy should have checked with the doc before printing the label

It might be reasonable if the doc had in mind starting her out with an extra dose to ease the pain, than going to a maintenance regimen.

Holy CRAP! I take one of those and I am out for hours!!

There is something wrong.

Hmmm, my Rx says to take up to 2 per day. I was given the script for the same thing, lower back pain due to muscles knotting up (not the technical term but you get the idea). I'll take a couple/week and am good in between.

The prescribing packaging insert I just looked up says 5 mg 3 times a day, alternatively 10 mg 3 times a day can be used. I interpret the script as written is 3 doses evenly spaced out on day 1, a dose overnight to help maintain for sleep, and 3 doses evenly spaced out daily afterwards until no longer needed. The insert cautions against use for more than 2 weeks.

Its about getting symptom relief then maintaining it.

Well, I'll have her call tomorrow to ensure that the dosage is right.

The last thing either of us need to deal with is a painkiller addiction.

I skipped some wording:

Take 1 pill 3 times a day for 4 days, then 1 pill before bed for 3 days, then 1 pill 3 times a day until prescription is exhausted.

yes that seems odd to me,
first phrase is a 'hit it hard' level...
second phrase is 'so you can sleep, but we are weaning you off',
third part seems to jack the level back up.

Could that first ", then" which I enboldened above actually be "and"? That might make more sense but even then it is a flakey use of the English language.

Bottom line, call the doc and see what he really wanted her to do.

Given this new info, I have to say this makes little sense. Even after having sat though the very nice white tablecloth dinner by the Flexeril drug rep a few months back.

Call the prescribing physician and clarify.

Flexeril is normally three times a day and is not addictive. How many tablets in the prescription? I bet they meant 1 tablet 3 times a day for 4 days then 1 at bedtime until finished.
