Weather Channel decides to name blizzards

In the late 1800s, Australian forecaster Clement Wragge first started naming hurricanes after women and politicians with whom he disagreed.

Can't wait for Blizzard Hickenlooper. :D

We should name lightning strikes. The one that hit my house was probably named Zappa.

The Weather Channel is so lost in their self importance, they could start naming pimples and i wouldn't be surprised.

Marketing. "OMFG! Snowmageddon!" was overused and Copyrighted. Heheheh.

well it will make it easy to identify who watches the weather channel.

Hey, I happen to like TWC.

Okay, naming blizzards is silly; but in general I like TWC's services -- especially their handheld app and their text alert service. I have alerts set up for both my own ZIP code and my parents' (even though they only live 35 miles away now), and I find them very helpful.

The texts themselves usually are summaries of NWS Advisories, Watches, and Warnings (there is some configurability on the site to determine which ones you'll receive), and the texts usually contain links to more detailed information on TWC's site.

Their handheld app is highly configurable and one of the better thought-out ones I've come across. It's also free (ad-supported), but it works a lot better than some apps I've paid for over the years.

In non-severe weather, it just plants a blue icon on the screen with the temperature on it. In severe weather, the icon turns red and the app can be configured to alert the user to the weather condition. Multiple locations are supported. The ads are non-intrusive (just plain banners, albeit very tiny ones), and the app has never crashed nor caused any sort of issue on any platform I've used it on.

The handheld app is independent of the text alert service. I use both out of habit because at the last place I lived, I had T-Mobile service, and the text alerts would work in places where I was roaming on AT&T. (The handheld app requires a data connection, which I didn't have when I was piggybacking on AT&T towers.)

So yeah, I think naming blizzards makes only slightly more sense than naming farts. But as for TWC, I think they provide a pretty useful service, all things considered.

Numbers 1 through 3.

(Why is this turning in to a Sac Fart thread?)

Yes, but you have an uncanny ability to escalate threads to new levels.

TWC is cartoon pundit weather, IMO.

It's weather for the masses, which is fine with me, for non-aviation purposes.

A couple of weeks ago there were simultaneous alerts here for tornadoes, high winds, severe thunderstorms, and the river flooding its banks. The dumbed-down versions were just fine with me because, in a practical sense, the what, where, and when were more important than the why for my purposes at the time.

You have to understand that a good part of this ZIP code floated down the Delaware almost exactly one year ago, which may help explain my fondness for the alerts.
