Yesterday we took a trip up to KLEX to watch the ponies run at Kenneland. Great fun was had by all even if only one of us broke even.:)

If you need a relaxing and enjoyable day I recommend making the trek. The folks at TAC were more than gracious taking us to and from the track which is directly across the street from the airport.

I even got to log an hour of actual on the way back. Flightaware:yes:

It's been awhile since I realized why I spent all the time and $$ getting my ticket.

That sounds like fun! And a lot easier than going to Hot Springs to the horse races. Although I like Hot Springs and the National Park/downtown area with the Bath House Row. We used to have a group fly-out to the horse races, but haven't done one in a while.

Oh, now, that sounds like a hoot.

I'm not a gambler. You couldn't drag me to a casino. But, I love watching the ponies run and I try to make it to Hot Springs at least once a year.

I'm not much of a gambler either Tim. I spent $10 the whole day on wagers. Add in the $15 or so for a couple bottles of water, hot dog and popcorn and it was a cheap day (as long as you don't count the fuel burn :))

Do you ever go to the Iroquois Steeplechase? I miss that part of living in Nashville. I was never part of the drunk crowd on the "hill", we preferred to get drunk like proper gentlemen and ladies tailgating in the infield ;) Coming up in a couple of weeks...always the weekend after the Derby.

The Steeplechase is THE event of the year. Unfortunately I'm rarely in town the weekend they run :(. However, that is not the case this year and I'll be up on the "hill" with the real people. :D

For those wondering what we're talking about: http://www.iroquoissteeplechase.org/

We're heading to 27K from FDK for the Rolex 3 day event in Lexington this weekend. One of the local guys on the red board said KLEX is a zoo for the horse park events. We're staying in Georgetown anyway.

Another place you have to go to watch the ponies run is Saratoga, NY. The wife and I flew up there for a long weekend last year and had an EXCELLENT time. Probably do it again this year.

Chip,

I responded to your post on the Red Board with recommendations. Let me know if you need anything while you are here in Lex.

You betcha I will! We're really looking forward to it.

I've never been to Hot Springs, don't know much about hawses and gambling, but during the last week I've be in total heat about a trio of nags and hoping to get the payoff. "I got the hawse right here, the name is Paul Revere, and there's a guy that says if the weather's clear: Can do, can do; if he says the hawse can do, can do, can do.

"Epitaph, Valentine, Paul Revere, I got the hawse riggghhht here," I hope. It's audition time -- Guys and Dolls-- at Lincoln county Community Theater and Orchestra, Damariscotta, Maine. The Director had me read "Nathan Detroit"(Frank Sinatra, in the motion picture). That'd be nice but I think I'd prefer "Nicely-Nicely Johnson"(great character role with three terrific production numbers).

"When you see a guy reach for stars in the sky you can bet that he's doing it for some doll". Did I mention I'm in heat?

Well this trip was a little more exciting than I bargained for.

After watching the oil pressure guage like a hawk over the mountains, it started to slowly heading south with about an hour left in the flight. First to the bottom of the green, then to the top of the yellow. Oil temp never really budged. About 10 minutes past the last airport before our destination, with about 15 minutes to go, it drops like a rock to 10lbs. Get to 27k and just after the turn on final it goes away completely. Pull power and dead stick it in.

After landing the needle bumps up a bit, so I gently taxi to the ramp and shut down. Check the stick and there's just enough oil in there to wet the bottom. About 2 qts. Started the 3 hour trip with 6.5 qts. Must have pumped 4 of them out in the last hour.

Went back Sunday morning and put in five qts to see what would happen. Good news is that we have oil pressure, so the bearings are still good. Bad news is there's a big-time miss and terrible blow-by. Compression is pretty good, but not what it was. John, the local A&P thinks it's a broken oil ring.

That's 2 out of the last 2 trips that have provided a supplemental adrenaline rush. Got a one way rental from Hertz and drove back to Maryland yesterday.

Chip,

That sucks! Glad you are OK and that it held until after you got on the ground. Are you getting it fixed at 27K? Did you hit any good places in Lexington? Not much here but Bourbon and horses, huh?

Haven't got any choice, no way it's flyable as it is. The A&P is John Schlegel with Flightworks. I asked around some of the guys who were hangar flying on Sun and he has a good rep, and I like some of the things he's been saying so far. If you have any inside info, pm me willya?

Went downtown on Thursday night. Nice little city, Lexington. Drove down the main strip where the marquee restaurants you recommended are, and settled on the Atomic Cafe as we kind of prefer the unusual and casual. Great place and a hapnin' patio! Thanks for the tip, never would have found it on our own. The rest of the weekend we had pretty much booked meals with friends and business contacts, so not much time to just play. Did find a real good Mexican place, Camino Grande in Georgetown. If you haven't been, and you like Mexican food, go. Some of the best I've had north of the border. Not fancy, but good food and very reasonable.

The park downtown with the horse sculptures at the finish line is great. Walked through and looked at the plaques. Lexington is big on fountains, no?

That good bourbon sure came in handy about an hour after touchdown, lemme tell you. Maybe we can hoist one when I come down to pick up the bird. Still need to find a good way to get there, as it's an 8 hour drive from and flying commercial to LEX from here is ridiculously expensive. Any of you POAers heading from FDK area to the LEX area in a week or two need a right seat? (hint, hint) :)

You are welcome. Good choice! Glad you found it.

Sorry I don't have any tips on mechanics in Lex as my bird goes to a Grumman guru in Owensboro, KY. If the locals said good things he's probably fine.

Let me know when you come back and maybe we can have a drink or get a bite to eat.
