Two beautiful RVs -- a -6A and an -8 -- flew into Mustang Beach Airport (KRAS -- Port Aransas, TX) this past Saturday, probably for lunch. They had wild paint jobs, and both shared a decal of Texas on the tail.

As they back taxied together, I commented to my wife "I'll bet we're going to see a show." I was right on the money...

The -6A departed first. He pulled it off quickly, departing into a headwind gusting to 30. He held 'er down low for over half the runway, quickly gaining speed until pulling up into a zoom climb at what was probably over 2000 FPM.

The -8 departed 10 seconds behind him. Instead of holding it down low, he immediately pulled up into a maximum performance climb, which was impressive indeed. I'm guessing 2500 FPM, minimum.

With exquisite timing, they joined up by the end of the runway. It was really, really neat to watch. This was not an easy maneuver, and they had obviously practiced it before.

*sigh* I want an RV-8 so badly, I can taste it! What a plane!

Me too. But SHMBO has ruled out tandem seating. And a 6/7 is just a bit too narrow. *sigh*
Back to Bonanza shopping........

If anyone knows of a relatively fast experimental with side-by-side seats, wider than a Cherokee, for around $75k, let me know.

Yeah, well my co-pilot/wife has ruled out the -6 because she can't reach the non-adjustable rudder pedals, so I'm "stuck" looking at -8s... :D

That will be the RV14.... but they aren't really out there yet unfortunately.

Move the pedals to a compromise position and compensate with cushions. That's what everyone else does, including Van's transition training guys. I'm sure they have dealt with a bigger height disparity than between you and Mary.

You gotta learn how to do an overhead break...

You just keep your yap shut. Mary can't fly the RV-6, get it? So I HAVE TO buy an RV-8, right?

Jeez. :D

You'll have to spend more or shop for a deal but a Glasair III is what you want. http://www.glasairaviation.com/glasairIIIspecs.html

Wittman Tailwind, not sure on cabin space but side by side and fast!

Darn you. I was blissfully unaware of the RV14.
Now my evil plan must begin.

There may be a few at OSH. Certainly the company demo -14 should be there.

Formation flying takes a lot of hard work and disipline. My RV-12 class was cancelled due to only 2 of 4 needed signing up. Oh well, maybe next year.

I would love an 8 also, trade the -12 in.

Are they selling RV14 kits already? I think that was the one I saw at Oshkosh last year. I thought it was pretty cool.

You're welcome.

That's what happened to me after extended analysis of the -7, the bastards put out the -10.

Have fun!
