Looking for a decent comm-only backup radio for in-plane and ground use. Doesn't have to be fancy.

Allison, FWIW I think they are all pretty much the same. I use the sportys sp200. Its a bit big but not worth buying a new smaller icom or other model. Personally I'd look for something without rechargeable batteries because if your away from home base and you don't have your charger and it dies AA batteries are usually easy to find.

That said IMHO they aren't much use other than at flyins to listen or talk to traffic or if you are within a few miles of what ever you want to receive or transmit too.
 
Not to spoil anyone's sale, but a real good New Yaesu (like the FTA -230) is only $195 (mypilotstore).
I've seen some aviation handhelds on craigslist.
