The city of Brownsville is still searching for a new aviation director to run Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport.
Former aviation director Larry Brown retired in July after serving in the position since 2003. Sesha Vorrey, the airport’s chief operating officer, acts as interim director.
City Manager Charlie Cabler said Brown, who still serves occasionally as a “volunteer consultant,” leaves big shoes to fill. The search is being conducted by ADK Consulting & Executive Search, a Florida-based head-hunting firm that specializes in the aviation industry.
“Come the new year, we’ll sit down with them and see what they have,” Cabler said.
He said ADK will deliver the names of four or five top candidates and city officials will take it from there.
“We want to bring someone in that has lot of knowledge about the airport responsibilities, but also has good contacts with the federal government, federal agencies, so we can continue the momentum of getting all funding possible to achieve our goal, which is to make the airport continue to grow,” Cabler said.
Brown is missed in part because of his connections within the Federal Aviation Administration and other agencies, he said. The former director left as the airport was laying the early groundwork for two major projects: extension of the main runway and construction of a new terminal building.
