With the economic situation so bad Walmart has resorted to a new market where customers never complain and there is plenty of them every day. Their products are guaranteed for life. And if there is a complaint is a miracle. Unlike other products Walmart is not buying liability insurance for this product speculating that no customer will sue them. Genuinely made in the USA.

Well, it's about time SOMEONE started a competition in that market. When we buried my mom, I was absolutely stunned at the cost of caskets.

Laugh all ya want the casket market was a racket. Good for walmart.

One reason that cremation is so popular. It is even expensive to rent a casket for the viewing.

Do state laws prevent FH's from refusing to use owner-supplied caskets?
If so, and this becomes rampant, I would expect their service rates to skyrocket.

Yeah, both of my parents were cremated -- but the stupid "display casket" was STILL crazy expensive.

No wood caskets available at Wally World apparently.

So, mom or dad are on their death bed, with their loving family surrounding them, and they hear a truck rumble up with their "bargain" casket from Wall Mart. The driver and his helper unload it then carry it up to the front porch, with all the neighborhood kids and families watching, the men offering to help.

Where do you want this casket from Wall Mart they holler, just in case anyone missed seeing them pull up.

What fun for all concerned. Finally, something interesting happening on the block for a change.

That's why my instructions say to have me cremated, with no "viewing". My survivors are instructed to take my ashes and pictures of me to a nice place and have a "Remember Tim" party afterwards. There's no way I want my estate paying for even a budget "funeral" the way it's done here and now.

PS - you're all invited. Standard POA rules apply - bring a six-pack from your local area, and be nice to each other. My will has instructions for my final post here.

For folks who think this is morbid, I've reached the age where my parent's generation is passing on, and I've gotten a bit too much experience with the funeral industry in the last couple of years. It's been a great education into what I DON'T want my survivors to go through.

I am donating my organs and the rest to the UCF medical school. UCF gives you $100 for the body. But I do not think anyone will take 100 year old organ. We have a family tradition of planting a tree in the backyard with the ashes of the loved one.

Exactly. That's how my family has always done it. I have found, however, that some people think it's awful, for religious or other reasons I haven't been able to determine.

This is what my parents instructed me to do with them. I was probably in my teens when I first started hearing them discuss such matters. Dad passed first when I was 26 and mom three years later.

I followed their instructions although many family members had a problem with that, yet not a single one of them offered to pay for what they wanted.

It wasn't just the cost, my parents simply didn't want a traditional burial. So I respected their wishes and I have no problem living with that.

True that. I learned just how many funeral homes and cemetaries are owned by one group.... And the rules they try to impose (for example, the cost to 'approve and install' a headstone you supply is 2/3 of the cost of getting one from them.

As a matter of fact, my dad used to always tell us that he didn't want any of us to see him after he died. "Remember me as you last saw me" he would say.

I kept that in the back of my head but the day I got the call that he had a heart attack, I rushed to the hospital, hoping so bad that I wasn't too late!

Well, I was:sad:. The doc asked me a few questions then told me I could go into the room and what do I do? You guessed it, I went in and completely forgot what dad had told me. Oh well, such is life.

Costco has been selling them for a while. It's a welcome addition. The Funeral industry was corrupt for years, not sure if it still is as bad. Talk about a sleazy salesman's dream situation.

Even KISS knows a market when they see one...
