So in July I am taking a several week vacation in France. I will be spending a couple of nights in Dijon. One stop is to visit the mustard museum there. While I am in the holy land of mustard I need a place to stay. Having never visited that city I am wondering if any one has some hotel recommendations?

I want 4-star accommodations. I am NOT a hostel guy, or cheap hotel guy. I like to live in a nice hotel, price is not an issue, 'good value' hotel stink or kitschy cheap, with odd ball management to me.

Any that any has first hand experience with?

Scott, I'll ask my sister she lived there for four years. She may know of something.

I stayed near there a few years ago. I'll need to look up the place.

BTW, a great guide to non-chain hotels in France is: http://www.chateauxhotels.com/
I have had great luck with most of the properties that I chose from that directory. Some were outstanding. That is my go-to guide for properties outside of Paris.

It's been a long time since I visited France - but when I did I stayed in several of the places listed here: http://www.relaisdusilence.com/EN/France/#top

They were great then - and I assume still are.

From the title I thought you were going to Wichita!:rofl:

Scott - I stayed down in Beaune, which is close to Dijon (Beaune for the wine, Dijon for the Grey Poopon). Ermitage de Corton on the Northeast side of Beaune (along the Dijon Road if I recall correctly).

IIRC, it's a unique property, with all the rooms being a bit different. Room I had was fine, hotel owner was excellent. YMMV depending on when you go, how full the hotel is, and what room you get. Def. not the chain hotel experience.

I'll be in Beaune after my visit to Dijon.

The plan is to travel down the river to Avignon and then TGV back up Paris for a few days.

I don't see anything on there in Dijon. Am I missing something?

I am fine where I am staying elsewhere. I have travelled France a lot. But mostly know Provence and Paris area. My SO lived in France and she has a lot of the other places covered. It is just that neither of us have ever been to Dijon. That is part of the reason for stopping, plus, seriously we are going for the mustard museum there!

Every commercial airport and train station in western Europe has at least one office whose job it is to answer precisely this question, even in podunk towns in BFE, Switzerland. It's a great resource.

Failing that there are guidebooks, and related websites. Like Michelin. This board may not be the best resource....

Sounds like a great trip. I had a car, so I made the hotel near Beaune a "base" and did both Dijon and the Beaune area from there.

I recall staying at a Middle-ages monestary-turned-into-unique-hotel somewhere between Beaune and Nimes (where my meetings were), but can't recall quite where.

Enjoy the trip!

I guess you had nothing to offer and offered same. Thanks!

But if I wanted a cold opinion from guidebook and tourists sites I would go there, in fact I did. But knowing that people I know and many that I have met on PoA have travelled there, I thought I might get some first hand info instead. BTW PoA and a few other boards are more than just places to talk flying.

I am doing the planes, trains, automobiles and boat trip this time. It is a big birthday for the SO. We normally only hit Europe on long weekends a couple times a year. She meets me when I am somewhere on my 6 or so trips a year. This time we thought we would make it a longer journey and do more than our typical one city, long weekend trip.

thanks for the wishes. I think it is going to be great.

Shounds like a great plan - a lot of my travel has been tacking-on to business trips (up to a week, at times), it really seems different to me to take a trip just for fun (ditch the suit for a sport jacket!).

Are you doing a riverboat or a chartered "barge/houseboat"? I'm not one for cruises, but have long wanted to charter a small houseboat along some of the rivers in France/Austria/Germany. A colleague/friend did that and thoroughly enjoyed it.

I do hope you have a fabulous trip - nice part of the world for that sort of thing.

If you say so. I've had some very nice vacations in Europe and Japan using those "tourist" airport/train sites. Found a few things there I would never have found using your method. Like a family in Sopron, Hungary that registered their guest room just to meet new people. Not a five star hotel, but that's not what I asked for at the time. And those guidebooks you hate so much advised against the Esterhazy Castle as well, despite the associated name. Would you have gotten that from this board?

It's hardly cold. This isn't the US. People will really try to make you happy, rather than just separate you from your money. If you don't treat their advice like you treated mine.

I offered you something. Should you choose not to take it, that's your option. But it' not correct to say it doesn't exist.

Not helpful here, but if you ever wind up in Verona, let me know. I can ttell you exactly where you need to stay.

Do you think the museum will have a special display on yellow mustard? And how ketchup and mustard go great together on hot dogs?

We both always want to do one of those canal boat tours. But this time we are just going to take the Viking cruise for one week to see if we even like being on a boat that long that does not have scuba diving associated with it! Then maybe the canal barge in a couple of years.

I have to admit the packing this is starting to confuse me too! I am too used to packing for business, this fun travel stuff is a lot different!!!

My friend said that it's entirely different if you choose the right operator. The private boat canal charters float for a few hours a day, you get off and spend most of the day in towns or villages along the way & tie up either in-town or in a more secluded area at night. He said to think of it as a "floating hotel room" rather than a ship. With a private cook.

That said, the pace may be slower than I care to take. Though just once...

That look like it might be the one! The one in the historical area of town does look great. Have you stayed there?

I am familiar with the chain and have had good experiences with them.

Not that one, but every other one I've ever stayed in was quite nice and should live up to your expectations.

Oh did they open a Chicago pizza joint there finally? :D
Yeah, right. In Brooklyn.
Anyway, FWIW I'll remind you to brush up on your French; from what I hear that is a big help there. Never been, but I've heard many stories.
And don't expect to find good pizza there, or even Chicago style pizza. :D

Scott- please let us know which mustard you find there goes well with Chicago hotdogs. :)

I get to France a couple of times a year. Mostly down on the Riviera near Nice and Cannes. My French will remain slightly corroded as those area tolerate English speakers really well, SO is fluent and went to college in France. Makes life really easy!!!!! The funny thing is because she was a poor college student when she lived there she really does not know the words for good food at high end restaurants. But because almost all my France trips have been on an expense account I seemed to have picked up that part of the language, so I fill in when we eat out. :D

As for French pizza. Oh yeah, I KNOW!!!! Far too many eggs on their pizzas!

A couple of useful menu items:

Rognons de veau
boudin
Fois gras

Glad I could help. :D

Some of my favorite pizza is found in Vienna, Austria. Though I have eaten pizza in Pisa.
