Amazon has the Virgin Mobile Pay-as-you-go MiFi for $49.99:

I just ordered one as the ideal solution for my once in a blue moon road warrior access needs. If nothing else the price is great - about $30-$50 cheaper than elsewhere.

Even if I temporarily sign up for the $20 a month, it's cheaper than adding tethering to my phone plan, and I can just subscribe when I need it.

Yeah, it uses Sprint's 3G network and it's not 100% perfect for coverage but it's 100% better than no connectivity.

[EDIT: I've just been warned that the Virgin service is unusable. I cancelled the order.]

*sigh* Like with Aviation services, I still need a servcie that doesn't require me to pay for the months I don't use anything.

Interesting. Sprint's headed for serious financial trouble... or is already there, depending on how you look at it. They're certainly at the head of the pack of carriers most likely to go through the bankruptcy car-wash and emerge squeaky clean.

I have a Virgin ghettophone on a grandfathered $6.99/mo voice plan. The coverage is smaller than on major carriers, although thus far I only found 1 airport where I needed to borrow FBO's phone to call briefer: Taos (KSKX).

If I wanted a data service, I would probably go with Sprint itself. Their conditions are much better than on majors, e.g. no blocking of VoIP like Skype.

When I actually 'travel' as opposed to just flying from one connected FBO to another I carry 3 options.
A Virgin Mobile USB Stick(prepaid plan), a Verizon USB Stick(prepaid) or my
T-Mobile Cellphone(prepaid). The 2 USB sticks I can plug into my tablet or a Cradlepoint Router(about 2x the size of the MiFi) and then pay for the day/week/month. Virgin Mobile is cheapest, with the prices already mentioned. Verizon is $15/day for 100MB or $30/week for 300MB(so, that gets used last but has the best coverage)
The phone I can activate data on for $3/day and tether it if I need it, it should do hotspot as well, but haven't tried recently.

MVNO??

I've had a Virgin Mobile USB stick for a few years. No plan, monthly fee when I activate it. WiFi is so common now that 3G access is not always needed.

On a cross country (NV-ME-NV) last year I only needed the 3G twice, and it would not work in central Maine. I've had no problems in rural NV or other locations.

Sprint just ran off all their data customers like me. The contract was 5gb of 3G and unlimited 4G. Last month they cancelled that and limited to 5gb of 4G as well with an overage rate of $50/gb!!! Well using Netflix I use 17-21gb. So now I have AT&T Uverse with unlimited broadband and 270 channels of nothing on for less than I can get a MiFi link that handles my needs.
