Vanilla Air to cancel 154 flights due to pilot shortage

Yeah, what are they paying these regional/entry level pilots there? Eventually the 'pilot shortage' game and rising prices of training combined with the diminishing compensation packages will cause an "Industry that cried wolf' situation.

Funny, I just looked them up. On there website no info on employment, and google vanilla sky employment/careers, nothing current comes up. Only thing is from 2011 when they started operations.

I found this Vanilla Air job ad for A320 captains; can't tell if it is current or relevant to the cancelled flights:

Trainee pay of ¥650,000 seems to be about $104,000 US at current exchange rates.

Trainee pay is noted for a max of three months, which is the pay received until line qualified.

650,000 yen = $6402/month. The pay once line qualified is $10,835/month (Y1,100,000)

How far does that go in Japan?

I haven't been in Japan in quite a few years, but back then cost of living in Japan was about 4 times what it was here.

Yep. Just like larger fuel tanks are the cheapest speed mod out there, low population density is the cheapest way to feel affluent. Which is why I love Flyover Country aka. non-coastal USA. :D

I'll pay the extra to live by the ocean, I grew up in flyover country, 18 years was long enough...:D

Can't be easy to get Japanese pilots if they have to be proficient in English. Big-time language barrier.

Wrong fx rate:

Should use
Japanese ¥650,000 = $6,416

...and not
Chinese RMB ¥650,000 = $104,218

D'oh!

That's what I get for doing a simple copy-and-paste to the Google search field in my browser. It brought up a filled-in currency converter and I failed to look at the units.

I can only presume that a base pay is not to be construed as a salary, but stipend for being available for flying each year. (Otherwise the lack of pilots is trivially obvious.) Looking more closely, I see that the base pay seems to cover the first 70 hours of flying (650,000/70 = 9286 yen/hour. About $91/hour for the initial 3 month trainee period.)

* Base Pay : Refer to table shown below
* Flight Pay : 70 hours included
* Overtime Pay : JPY 15,000 per hour beyond 70 hours (taxable)
* Contract Completion Bonus (CCB : \2,000,000 upon completion of year 3
: \2,000,000 upon completion of year 5

So the flight pay after the first 70 hours is JPY 15,000/hr =~ $148/hr. The question is how many hours a year will an A320 captain expect to fly with Vanilla Air?

Figure 800 to a 1000 per year.
