In upgrading an engine (say from an O-320 to an O-360, etc.) the price of some of these salvage/"used" engines is pretty low. There are a lot that have logs available, and some that don't.

What should a person look for specifically when researching these used power-plants? Are there specific questions/specs to help determine whether it would be worth buying then repaired or even a power-plant pre-buy that could be done?

you should know who you are buying from and what their policies are.
 
You should treat the engine as a collection of parts. Inspect all that are reasonable. After you own it, I'd be taking a jug or two off to look at the cam, etc before installing....They're priced low to reflect "unknown" status.

The larger salvage companies will not sell you any engine that will have problems, the parts sell too well, they will disassemble and make more on parts like 0-300 cranks. than to waist time and money trying to fix warrantee problems.
