USA Olympic Uniforms Made In China

They should be burned not because they're made in China, but because they're so damned ugly. Berets? Seriously? Except for the Armed Forces and Boy Scouts, I'm pretty sure no one wears those damned things in the USA.

Of course, that's better than the flat brimmed baseball hats cocked sideways, and proudly worn by some idiot pitcher in the All Star game - WTF is that?

Why must they be emblazoned with the Polo logos? What happened to doing something for National Pride instead of Free Marketing???

Shame on you Ralph Lauren. Shame on the USOC.

Free marketing? I'm betting Ralph Lauren paid handsomely for the opportunity to supply those uniforms. The Olympics has become pretty much ALL about advertising and marketing. In fact, I probably committed a copyright violation just mentioning the name of the event.

Perhaps if Charlie Reid and his cohorts wouldn't demonize American business owners for making a profit, and if they wouldn't regulate them out of the country, it would be more feasible for an American company to produce stuff here.
In fact, since the USOC is not publicly funded, Charlie's demand that they purchase domestic uniforms is one more example of his trying to regulate private institutions out of existence.

:rofl::rofl::rofl:

Now that was funny!

Stuff isn't produced here because no one in the US will work in unsafe conditions for 16 hour shifts and 35 cents an hour. It is all about profit margin, not merely profit.

Hi all,

If it wasn't for the stuff made in China, I wouldn't have anything to wear. :D

I recently bought a pair of work boots and the Logo said "CAT" as in Caterpillar.

On the inside, "Made in China."

It goes a lot deeper than Olympic uniforms.

We currently have 1 flag maker in the U.S. All of our little flags that we were waving on July 4, were made in China.

1950's it was textiles
1960's it was steel
1970's was automobiles
1980's it was electronics
1990's it was housewares
2000's it has been the remaining items

What irks me more than anything is certain congressional officials who are acting outraged at this. Wake up folks, this is not a new item.

It is time we started taking our country back and get back to basics.

We have become a lazy nation when it comes to our rights and freedom. We are close to losing both.

Terry

p.s.> I have got to go calm down.

You mean Harry, right?

But I agree with you. When I lived in Charlotte, NC, the region was bemoaning about the loss of the textile industry. They failed to understand that they were just one geography in the textile timeline. Textiles were big in England, until they could be manufactured in the New World, namely Massachusetts and New England. Then and particarly post Civil War, textiles moved south to be closer to the raw material of cotton, and of course where there was cheaper labor. The move to offshore textile manufacturing is just the next iteration.

And it's primarily labor cost and regulations that have moved the textile business largely offshore. But some high end and specialty textile businesses are still here, and doing well. I had one client that sent bolts of fabric down to a maquiladora in Mexico for rough cutting only. Then those cut pieces of fabric were shipped back up to North Carolina for final sewing. I didn't really understand the rationale, but that was their business model.

Lickspittle, if America was so patriotic about the Olympics why do we have to find foreign investors to sponsor our teams? I remember when Yugo was the official sponsor of the US Olympic volleyball team. What a horse crap load of hypocrisy in a country where everybody shops at Wal Mart. Fah, make me puke.

People buy Chinese made crap at Walmart because it costs them a little less.

That is the same reason that American Companies, which they complain about, manufacture the stuff in China. If they made it here, paid union wages, paid State, Federal and l local taxes, paid health care benefits and conformed to all OSHA, EPA, FTC and other regulations, it would cost more.

If people want those jobs here, and if they want all those things I mentioned, they will have to be willing to pay more for it. No one is going to manufacture here unless they can make a profit, and they can't make a profit if no one buys from them.

What's more American than "Made in China" labels? At least we're not hypocrites.

Perhaps someone here could figure out how to cheaply make those "made in China" labels. Then we could sell them to the Chinese.

Tell me where I can buy Canadian- or American-made goods anymore. I want some. Wal-Mart has driven all those smaller retailers out of the market. I am tired of shoes that last only a few weeks or months, hardware of dubious quality, clothes that fall apart.

To buy stuff we need jobs. Without manufacturing and retailing jobs (other than the part-time Walt-mart jobs) we can't buy stuff. So who will buy all the cheap imports in a few years?

Dan

The politicians must be having a slow day attacking GA or something to be whining about the USOC.

Go into the USOTC training center and look at their tourist trap stuff. It's all made in other countries. The olympic flags are made in Taiwan and everything that says USA on it is not from here either. I bet their training facilities and equipment isn't made here either. Their punching bags and floor mats look like something you can get from anywhere that says "made elsewhere" on it.

America has turned into the walmart of the world. America is a store front for stuff from everywhere else just like wallyworld only on a larger scale. Think about it.
Even if you do find something that is made here, I'd go as far as saying there is a high probability that the base materials to make it are from somewhere else. I wonder where the small set of US flags that are actually made here get their cloth and flag poles. Japan? Or Mexico? Chances are they use Juki industrial sewing machines to put them together.

The most amusing was at a job I had once where they built computers. Every one that went out the door had a PROUDLY MADE IN USA sticker on the case. Everyone knows the guts of a computer is from all over the world so that's just a big sick joke blatant lie to start with. The amusing bit was that the PROUDLY MADE IN USA sticker sheets said "made in hong kong" on them. We can't even make the damned "made in usa" stickers here. That's just messed up.

It's just a big sick joke and anyone who takes the whole thing seriously needs to take their valium (made in Peru) and relax.

Some New Balance shoes are made in the US, I wound up buying a pair of Italian made shoes, had em 2 years now, they still look about new. Was $200, I'd likely have bought 4 pair of Nike's by now.

Understood completely, but why is it newsworthy and contemptible when the USOC which is a funds limited organization does the same thing to save a few bucks as everyone else? I'm not saying buying Chinese is a great practice, I'm saying that calling out the USOC for doing what everyone does is crap. Was there an American manufacturer that came forward to donate uniforms, even undercut or match the Chinese price? If not, I don't want to hear a freaking word about 'patriotism' in all this.

Which was basically the gist of my most (#5). (The one where I called "Harry Reid" by my friends name "Charlie Reid).

I'm sorry, we're going broke and this is what everyone thinks is worthwhile news?

That is exactly why I buy Gateway and Dell. None of that Apple/China stuff in my house.:rofl:

Henning,

I learned a new word today.

Thanks,
Terry :D

And when you open the case and look inside, guess what you will find? Hard drives from Taiwan, memory from Japan, batteries from China, displays from India, mounting case hardware from Mexico. The case itself may be american (probably imported) however the guts are from everywhere else. Same goes for just about anything else you might own. It's a crockup.

2010's it is going to be AEROSPACE (Goodbye Cirrus, Beech, Continental, .......)

GE Aviation, United Technologies, and others have already sold their souls in pursuit of next quarters results. Heck, the ink is barely dry on the UTC deal to provide "limited" technology transfer to the Chinese and already they've sent too much information::nono:

Frank,

My post is wrtten sarcastically.

Why are people starting political threads outside the Spin Zone?

Why are people starting political threads outside the Spin Zone?

Richard,

I thought the "POA Board" would move the topic to the "Spin Zone."

How can I respond in the Spin zone when I am just participating?

Besides, this isn't about Politics, this is about The U.S. Olympic team wearing privately funded uniforms.

Seriously, turn the uniforms in and go buy new ones from Wally World. If Afghanistan is sending women to the Olympics, to show how far they have come in women's rights, then shouldn't we remain quiet and just wear the commie uniforms? After, isn't it about "Sportsmanship?"

BTW, it is okay with me if POA board moves the thread.

Terry :D

This is about sports, not politics.

The title of the article linked by the OP says, "Lawmakers furious over China-made U.S. Olympic uniform." Sounds political and inflammatory.

I just joined the Spin Zone. Man, talk about Political and Inflammatory!

Even OReilly would have trouble holding his own in the SZ.

I think the Spin Zone should be renamed the Straw Man Zone, because that's most of what goes on there.

Imagine when they find out that we have athletes on the US team that weren't even made in the USA...

The server you're talking about this on, and almost every piece of the hardware to get it from your monitor across many states and back...

Virtually none of it made here. ;)

I would bet that the uniforms have been made overseas for decades. This nonsense is all due to a recent resurgence in "Made in America" sponsored by that Disney Media news outlet.
Buy American if you can But my guess is you're not likely to find something "All American". It's a global economy and in the US, we're more of a service economy, not manufacturing or agriculture. Even our military hardware is purchased from overseas.
Get over it!

Even our military hardware is purchased from overseas.
Get over it!

Why?

If it is not in our best interest, why should we not be interested in changing the status quo?

A multitude of factors went into the current manufacturing deployment process. Wage rates at home and abroad, tax policies at home and abroad, advances in communication and transportation methods, market demographics and political considerations.

We grew fat and lazy and lost a great deal of our edge. Why can't we learn from our mistakes and reverse or improve on the factors that caused us to fall behind in so many critical areas? I'm not saying that we should fight to bring back the manufacture of bed sheets or running shoes, but our military hardware? We definitely need to have control over that type of channel.
