Is there any financial advantage to updating software databases at OSH?
I know it can be convenient. Are there usually any monetary incentives to drag my Garmin 496s to OSH for an update?

Yes. For a 496 you can typically get a NAV update for $50 (it's what I paid during Sun N Fun earlier this year and it seems to be the going rate). I don't think you can do it that cheap from home but I could be wrong. They can update your 496 in about 5 minutes.
