The Friends of Galt (F.O.G.) are pleased to invite you to the opening of Steve Mark’s
Uncontrolled Airspace

This exhibit of 57 large format B&W photographs has been culled from the 200+ that make up the documentary work The Galt Airport Project which Steve shot throughout 2008. The photographs capture the people, activities, scenes and ethos that pervade this little patch of heaven in Greenwood, Illinois known as Galt Airport.

The project was photographed in 4x5” large format B&W using studio and press equipment from the 40’s and 50’s – an era in which high resolution and studio lighting were hallmarks of the profession. This ethic was carried forward in the current show and all prints on display are 16x20” or larger. In addition to the 57 matted and framed prints, all 200+ photographs from the project will be projected on a large screen throughout the evening. A photo-shoot setup illustrating the manner in which the studio equipment and techniques were used will be shown, and this setup will include a classic airplane. The use of the maintenance hangars at Galt to display this show will add to the unique atmosphere of a gallery opening in the very environment in which the photographs were created.

This event is one day only, Saturday, May 30, 2009 from 12:00 noon until 9:00p.m. in the maintenance hangars at Galt airport. Admission is free (donations to cover the food costs are appreciated but not required), all ages are welcome, and everyone is invited. The photographer will be present to discuss the work and appetizers and soft drinks will be served courtesy of the Friends of Galt.

If you are a devotee of grass roots aviation, love fine art photography or are interested in a fun evening at the Friendliest Airport Around, then make your way to Galt for this event. And all you Galt regulars who volunteered over the last year for these seemingly innumerable photos, this is your first chance to see yourselves “in action”. See you there!

Galt Newsletter said:
Unfortunately, I have some sad news. Last Saturday, November 13th, one of our Galt Airport family, Steve Mark, passed away after complications during his recovery from a heart attack. The news of Steve's untimely death is obviously a shock to us all.
Almost everyone at Galt knew Steve from his now famous photography project, “Uncontrolled Airspace.” Steve spent well over a year at the airport, capturing on film and ultimately sharing with the world, in his words, “this little slice of heaven called Galt Airport.” His project was proudly displayed in the EAA museum during AirVenture 2009, and one of his photos was selected to represent the EAA Young Eagles program on a national level.
Steve's tireless work in promoting our airport, and bringing public awareness to grass roots general aviation, was an inspiration to all of us. But more than that, Steve's innate passion, determination, and gift to transform the ordinary into extraordinary will not soon be forgotten. He truly put his fingerprint on Galt, and left our airport better than he found it.

We will miss Steve, and send our deepest condolences to his family. His funeral will take place in Niles, MI on November 23rd at 11:00 a.m. Not all details have been finalized yet but, for those who are interested, I have been informed that more information will be published in both the South Bend Tribune, and Niles Daily Star newspapers.

Condolences.
