Wanted to spend some time with my father this weekend, early Fathers Day, so I drove him to Washington DC to the WWII Veterans Memorial and the Udvar Hazey Aviation Museum at Dulles Airport.

Some crazy traffic in DC not to mention the one way streets.

Definately one for the bucket list. We have flown into Leesburg and rented a car, or make the drive from home. Ohio to DC is 5 hrs.

Amazing display of aircraft that made history !

I must have missed that. Was it next to the grass runway?

Great Flight just landed at the wrong airport, hate when I do that!

Maybe one of our experts could help move this out of the Gastons Thread

Last year we did a Clark Griswald family trip. We drove to NYC from Iowa and stayed with some friends for a couple days and drove down to DC. Udvar Hazey Air and Space Museum is one of the best museums I've been to. Hope to get out there to do it again. Another really good museum was the Cosmosphere at Hutchinson KS which we just visited last week.

I looked for the taxiway from Dulles to the museum. Never did see it. :dunno:
The taxiway is only open to the public once a year, and then only to aircraft with reservations, for the annual "Be-A-Pilot" day. Margy Natalie coordinates this event, with various ordinary and exotic airplanes flying in and the public being let outside the museum onto the ramp.

This year the event is tomorrow - June 14th.

If anyone's coming to visit in the future, drop me a line - I volunteer there and can help you find your way and possibly coordinate a private docent-led tour for groups.

I applied to participate in their Be a Pilot Day with my Trinidad, not rare, historic or exotic enough. Dear Gary form letter response.

I believe it - Margy has a waitlist several pages and years long.

The first year I suffered some hearing damage parking a ParisJet (even with hearing protectors).

But the most fun was marshalling in a pair of Corsairs and a Wildcat.

Agreed. We were blessed with being invited to the very first "Be A Pilot Day" at Udvar-Hazy, back in '04, and were thus able to fly into Dulles in our little spam-can. It was awesome!

The museum is absolutely hard to beat. Dayton's Air Force Museum has more aircraft, but U-H has more one-of-a-kind historic planes. It's a magical, amazing place.

Fly into Dulles. For a busy Class B airport it's surprisingly cheap. I think I got out of there for about $28 for landing/handling fees last month (compared to over $100 at Logan for far worse service). Very friendly service at Signature.
