uAvionix announces external magnetometer

Meanwhile, if one had installed a G5 HSI, you would be enjoying a GMU-11 magnetometer, rate-based autopilot integration, and GPSS roll steering in a certified package. Plus with a dual G5 installation, AI reversion if the primary AI fails. I think the AV-30 is still aimed primarily at the VFR pilot.

I'm guessing the internal magnetometer added to the AV-30 was not cutting it.
I don't think it's necessarily a case of the internal magnetometer not cutting it. I seem to recall that an external magnetometer was planned from the very beginning. They seem to be taking multiple baby steps from vacuum DG replacement towards slaved HSI.

Also, the external magnetometer was actually pre-announced a few months ago:

There is no internal magnetometer in the av30. It is a "magnetic sensor" (per uavionics tech support) which doesn't seem to do anything. They are aiming for certification for the external magnetometer spring of next year.
$250.
Right now, just experimental, but they're on their way to certification, and their track record in that regard is excellent.

I'm guessing the internal magnetometer added to the AV-30 was not cutting it.
