It's sad, especially happening on Christmas day. The weather has been crappy around here, fog, freezing drizzle. Most pireps the last couple days have had a lot of light to moderate icing.
 
Weather info is everywhere. Don’t know the specifics but shouldn’t be a surprise. It does sound like weather was a major contributor.

Another thing, even if the plane is ‘mostly’ legal for 300’ & 1, it may not be the best idea on that day/ night with a particular pilot. Just some random comments, may not be pertinent for this trajic accident.
