I've seen that in person on the ground once from a missile launch during a different test in SoCal and I was on the coast in NorCal. Not knowing what it was was a real "What the Holy F?" moment.
When you are in the dark but the missile contrail is still above the horizon and being lit by the sun it creates that effect.
Way cool but people were literally driving off the road trying to figure out what was going on! It was so large, UFO was an entirely plausible explanation!

I've seen that in person from an overhead SpaceX rocket that launched at night from Vandenberg. It was super cool.
