I'm thinkin' I'm gonna add the commercial rating the last week in December...any bad advice? any good advice?

I haven't done any serious training in a year and a half so it's definitely time to do some...
 
get the written out of the way as soon as possible. the more theory you know the earlier, the better.

I'll sacrafice small furry creatures to the weather gods if necessary...but I'm stacking the deck and heading southwest for the training.

Other comment, I've tuned up the exam a couple times just never pulled the trigger. I'll hit the books this weekend and get the prep/refresh done. As I understand it, the exam is basically the instrument test again with a bit more emplhasis on flight planning.

Other note, the Frankenkota goes in for annual and master cylinder overhaul next Monday. I think it just likes visiting the heated hangar...

Actually the Commercial written is considerably easier than the Instrument. Many say that the Comm written is the easiest one you will take. So far I would agree. Easier than the Private - I think there are only around 450 questions in the exam pool total. Get a prep book like Gleim, read all of the questions and answers a few times over the course of a week and you will probably ace it.
 
since you've been flying complex for many years, the practical should be pretty much a non-issue. just need those procedures and you're done.
 
I'm going to give Sheble a shot. If nothing else it'll be a few days of warm weather and cheap hotel-n-eats...a vacation with lots of flying.

I agree the practical should be fairly straightforward. The Frankenkota isn't complex but it does require more engine management than most light GA SEL. Will have to remember to put the darn gear down before the scraping noises start...

Sheble isn't bad and has actually cleaned up their act quite a bit in recent years. AVI Casino is a pretty good and cheap place to stay. Best advice I can give you - try to rent a car while you are there. Sheble's 'courtesy car' is a death trap!

Let me know if you have any questions about their program - I did my Commercial there a few months ago.
