Are Class B tower direct phone numbers generally not accessible and not given out?

I had a question and tried to call LGA tower, but couldn't find a direct number. I called the airport general number and they could not give me the number and could not transfer me. But she was kind enough to radio the tower and one of the controllers gave her his private cell number to give to me for my question.

Around here the airport is state owned but the tower is FAA. Different entities. I can call tower and sometimes do if I have a question. They've always been helpful.

Just fly in and do an approach without clearance. They should give you a number to call ;)

Normally, if you can't find a phone number, next time you check on with approach, they can usually find it for you. In my experience, there is no hard and fast rule. Some towers publish a public number, other don't. Controllers are usually more than happy to provide a phone number if you ask.

Here is an older directory from AOPA. The link goes directly to a PDF download:

2005/2006 AOPA airport directory

I used it to call the Las Vegas tower once, although no one answered or returned my message.

Just curious - When you say "airport general number," do you mean the "airport manager" number (718-533-3401) listed in the A/FD?

You should be able to find the number for the controlling TRACON online. Call them and ask them for the number for the tower. They'll probably ask why you're asking so explain and they should give you the number. That's how I got the number for BOS Tower.
