I was wondering how they will handle informing the public about the actual closing times. I fly out of LBE and we're on the list. I saw today that they have April 7th set as the shutdown date.

Other than NOTAMs, are there other ways to find out? I figure the AF/D and sectionals will eventually have this info, but not until the next update.

NOTAMs are going to be the main one, being the whole purpose of them in the first place. We know that pilots won't check them, and will end up getting confused at the lack of a tower.

On the other hand, the reverse seems to happen when towers get erected.

What do you expect other than a notam?

I would think there'll be a comment on the ATIS, but now that I think about it you'll probably just hear the AWOS on the ATIS freq (like when the tower is closed).

Some towers only have an AWOS. Like KIPT.

KSBY, too. In any event, NOTAMs will be the way you'll know, and in this century, you're bloody foolish not to check them before flying. Word here is KESN tower will close April 7; haven't heard about KSBY yet. Also, AWOS's can have notes added, so I imagine that will happen at some airports, too.
