Neither one of these guys had been in an airplane until today. The older one has done some work for me and I promised him a ride. He mentioned he had a 15 yewar old cousin that would love to go. He had worked for me also this summer. So after the 4th we flew around the area for a while hit 200 MPH ( a goal for the 15 year old ) in the RV-10, then throttled back to 150 to cruise around the city.

Yeah, I'm planning to take an 8 year old kid and his first-timer dad tomorrow morning in a 182. We haven't talked about where to go, but their neighborhood at 1000 AGL at 130 knots is pretty likely. I'll warn them that they are more likely to spot their school then their house.

Crappy conditions for flying. Rough & hot, but we climbed to 10K and found cool air. They were amazed at the different temperatures.

Still a great day, and they bought breakfast! :happydance:

congrats...... two more victims with our disease now...

I LOVE doing first flights. Way to go!

That's the only problem with our new plane -- rides will have to be one person at a time...which rules out little kids. (I learned long ago -- NO little kids without a parent on board.)

Depends on how little, and on the kid.

If you have to repeat yourself 250 times to get anything done, flying without a parent to do that would be a problem.

Actually, little kids between 6 and 11 are fine, alone in the plane. Once they hit 12-ish, and become self-aware, however, I worry.

I once had a 12 year old boy freak the eff out, during climb out. Turns out he was deathly afraid of flying, and chose that moment to become aware of his new fear. Had his mother not been with him, things could have gotten bad.

After that, my rule for Young Eagles was always "2 kids at a time -- plus one PIC -- Parent In Command"...

It took longer to fly the Cub Scout troop that way, but I felt a lot more comfortable.

Truly enjoy doing first flights for kids and adults alike. You never know when you will get another convert to the fraternity.
