So is it too early to start talking Oshkosh? Who is going? What are you excited about looking into?

My son and I are camping, Tues-Fri or Sat. Looking forward to seeing a lot of great airplanes, taking a good look at some kit possibilities, especially the Baslee WWI replicas.

My first time, so I'm not 100% sure what to expect...

Not at all. Pop into the AirVenture sub-forum. The chatter never stops, year round.

"The most important topic of conversation over lunch -- What's for dinner?"

It's. Never too early, this is an off year for me,go every other year. Enjoy

Last year was our first.

Hints
1. You cannot see it all in one visit
2. Use the shuttles - we did but my pedometer still showed 18 miles in 3 days

Especially over in the Airventure (nee EAA Oshkosh, which is what a lot of us call it) subforum. Much more info over there.

Jim

The entire world outside of Wisconsin calls it Oshkosh.
Those inside Wisconsin call it "The EAA."

Only the EAA's greedy marketing flacks (when told they couldn't invoke trademark rights on Oshkosh) call it Airventure.

Roscoe Morton went to his grave unable to actually pronounce Airventure without inserting an extra syllable in it.

Went to Oshkosh when I was in collage. Camped there and had a blast, met some really nice folks. Would like to do it again.

My educated guess is that it the pushing of "Airventure" over "Oshkosh" is absolutely a trademark/branding issue for EAA. "Oshkosh" is a weak trademark at best; its harder to defend because you can't stop people from using the name of the city. You can't stop someone from selling T-shirts or postcards that say "See (and avoid) you in Oshkosh!" and have airplanes on them. That's just one way that someone could traffic on the popularity of the event without any revenue going to EAA.

"Airventure" is a made up word, and that makes it a stronger trademark that is easier to defend. Put "Airventure" on a T-shirt or postcard without taking a license from EAA and you're likely to hear from them about it. Unfortunately, "Airventure" doesn't have 45 years of history behind it.

I got a vague sense that the aggressive marketing of "Airventure" to the exclusion and banishment of "Oshkosh" softened when Pelton took over from Hightower.

DJ, that was exactly the case. The EAA actually attempted to stop someone from making Oshkosh shirts with airplanes on them and they were summarily dismissed.

You are right, things definitely do seem to have softened on the front with the regime change.

My dentist was talking to me years ago and I said I was about to head to Oshkosh, and he says, Oh, you're going to the EAA? I told him I didn't know he was from Wisconsin and he says how did I know?

OK, then, officially A!rv*n+ur* is hereby a banned word in this forum. HOORAY. EAA or Oshkosh or EAA-OSH or any combination thereof is perfectly acceptable. A!rv*n+ur* is not.

I HAVE SPOKEN!!!

First time I want to OSH they took us on a tour so we could kind of see the whole show at a glance. I went thru the museum there and they had a little mock-up of a WW2 repair shop. There was a part sitting on the bench in the workshop (can't remember what part it was) that had "NFG" painted on it in white paint. Got a chuckle out of that.

I don't care if we call it WeirVenture -- Mary and I will be there, camped in the North 40.
:)

I'm thinking of going. Would be my first time. Have a plane, why the hell not? Time to start reading up on it. Sounds its best to get there early....

Read the NOTAM, understand the NOTAM, fly the NOTAM... And go. You won't see it all in a week and you'll probably want to go back.

There is no bad time to be there, but, yeah, mon-wed when it's the hard core folks and everyone is still fresh and excited is really special.

Looks like more Buzz for Osh then for SNF. Not many people on this site attended SNF this year. Can't check out OSH but I will definitely go next time.

That's an assertion. I've never seen you pitch a tent in all the years we've been going.

Then you never saw Cyndi and I at the end of the north 40 under the wing of the 182 in 2012. Then again, we were on our honeymoon and you may not have seen us out of the tent for very long :goofy:

Ron stays in Vintage, far from the unwashed masses in the North 40. He only sets foot on our hallowed ground (which is sovereign Texas territory that week, BTW) when he knows there is fine beer to be had, and good aviation lies to be heard, and told.

AKA: The HOPS Party on Wednesday! ;)

Jim's 182, N73CQ is a Vintage aircraft (much like the pilot).

Too early? I was planning 2015 at 500' on departure last year :-)
