Im sitting in a motel room 300 miles from home not knowing if I'll be an airplane owner tomorrow or not. I flew the plane a few weeks back & really liked it but since the annual is due this month it just made sense for me to be there assisting with the annual to help finalize my decision.

If there is no corrosion, inside the engine or airframe, & the compression is good I'll make an offer to counter their asking price & see what happens.

I'm willing to write a check tomorrow or walk. I have no emotions involved in the decision.

I'll post what happens.

Good luck for a clean annual and a new plane! But, you're smart to have the attitude that you might just as easily walk. Don't let emotions get you into a deal you'll regret down the road. (But also don't let cold feet keep you from becoming the owner of a plane you'll enjoy for years.)

Best deal is one that you are willing to walk away from if necessary.

So how does that work? You are there with the mechanic and if the process goes well but finds a few things, do you write up a contract? Or did you make an offer already? You make it sound like you didn't make an offer yet until the annual is done.

Just trying to figure out the flow of things.

There IS a process for those of us that want to go through the more formal flow of buying a plane. But it sounds like @saddletramp is doing it the old-fashioned way which is NOT a bad thing, it's just more direct.

The guy who ended up buying my plane did the same thing. He knew he was interested, flew down to look at it, we took it up and he asked a few questions. For my protection I had the broker that was selling it draw up a quick purchase agreement, which we both signed. Then we filled out the registration application and Bill of Sale.

The next morning he transferred the funds, and flew home in the plane. Simple as that.

When I bought my plane originally I think I made it just about AS complex as possible. Looking back, if I had the cash on hand instead of having to go through financing, it would have been a much more hassle-free process like the one @saddletramp is going through now.

Good luck on the annual and inspection. Be careful to NOT let emotions get a hold of you. Even though you said you won't, it's a LOT harder to walk away from a plane when you're there in person then it is when the plane is 100 miles away at a pre-buy.

The 182A is a damn-fine airplane! There are lots of folks who believe the straight-tails were the best planes Cessna ever produced. Hopefully this one works out for you. I recently sold the 182A I owned since 2006. I hated to give it up, but I don't need a load-hauler with 4 seats any longer.

It's kind of an addiction, isn't it?

It definitely is..I get sucked into looking at planes at least once a day. Thank goodness I don't actually have the spending money right now, else I'd be in real trouble with the wife ;P

Well, today is yesterday's tomorrow, so how's it going?

I'm sitting by the hangar waiting for the owner to show up so we can take it up & warm the engine. I haven't made an offer yet but told them I'd have a cash offer after the annual.

I printed ads from other 182As and vRef value. Presently. They are $8,000 over vRef value.

If I buy it I'll come back later & fly it home. I can have insurance in place with a phone call.

I chose a 182A because I want to tow gliders with it. It will also be our back country airplane. It has a STOL kit on it.

Sounds great, hope to see some pictures of the new toy if all goes well.

Good luck, pictures are always nice ,if you buy it.

I bought it today. The annual went great except for a crack in the muffler. A new one was ordered. I'll go pick it up on July 5 due to waiting for the new muffler & schedule conflicts.

"Never fly the 'A' model of anything!" ~ An old and wise test pilot (who obviously never flew a C182A)

Congrats. If you ever paint it, please do not remove the American Flag in the tail!!!

Good looking airplane! Congratulations!

Man that's a clean looking 182, congrats!

So when are you starting the 182/180 tailwheel conversion ;)

Congrats. About the only thing I don't like about the straight tails is the so called "narrow" body, and that's mostly a nitpick more than anything.

Very nice looking 182! I hope you have many hours of safe, trouble-free flying time!

It's going to remain a trike. I plan on giving glider rides & lessons & this will be my tow plane. There aren't as many tailwheel pilots around these days.

Congrats on the nice looking bird! Where's the interior pics?

Bah! to the tailwheelers here! LOL

We end up having to train our own tailwheel tow pilots. There has been discussion of trading the Pawnee for some type of nose dragger. But they just don't perform like a Pawnee. Good luck with your glider tows. Where are you?
