Puerto Rico voters signal desire for statehood

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - Puerto Ricans showed support in a non-binding referendum to change the island's status as a U.S. territory, preferring to become the 51st U.S. state even as they ousted their pro-statehood governor from office, according to official results on Wednesday.

50 stars fit that blue field real nice. How would 51 fit on there?

Let's add Cuba to the list. that would make 52, and then the Cubans could go home.

Yeah, interesting. The referendum is non binding, but the first time they've had that result. Th local politicians don't want it though, and will find a way to backpedal. Apparently, half of all Puerto Ricans are living here as it is.

51? If we add another state wouldn't there be 58?

:rofl::rofl::rofl:

He also indicated the other night that there was only one colony. Can't blame him, he really wasn't raised here so he didn't learn much about America.

Tonight, more than 200 years after a former colony won the right to determine its own destiny,

No.

If you gonna make a joke about the 57 states at least get it right!!!

The quote was this:
It is wonderful to be back in Oregon," Obama said. "Over the last 15 months, we’ve traveled to every corner of the United States. I’ve now been in 57 states? I think one left to go. Alaska and Hawaii, I was not allowed to go to even though I really wanted to visit, but my staff would not justify it

So he had been to 57 states and will be at one more, which means that there was 58 states. So adding one more state Puetro Rico would make 59 states.

But Obama also said that he had 'one left to go, Alaska and Hawaii' which is two states so that meant there are 59 states already and adding one more would be 60!

Get it right man, its 59 or 60!!!! :D:D:D:D:D

Not 58!!! :no::nono:

I stand corrected.

Ironically in the election the pro statehood governor was ousted by a narrow margin in favor of a candidate who opposes statehood.

Technically if one accepts the fact that 1 = 2 (one left to go = alaska and hawaii) any number can be proven.

For 51 stars it would be three rows of 9 stars plus 3 rows of 8 stars or 3(9) + 3(8) = 51. The rows would be in an alternate fashion. Very similar to current flag arrangement.

You really must read this, most of the voters left the second part of the question blank, IOWs they are too stupid to vote.

But be careful, the liberals might get them the ability to vote, then they would become part of the 47%, and vote the democratic ticket even if the devil himself was on it.

I remember the same happened with Hawaii and end up becoming a state.

There was a law or something that said we stop at 50 stars no matter how many states we add. I know, I was alive and remember when they added Alaska and HI. :redface:

Seriously, I was. :yes:

:dunno:

Of the people that voted, they got a majority.. How is that different than any other election? Some left it blank? Who cares. Out of the 40% that left it blank you don't think that they would pick up the additional 5% to have a majority?

If you voted for the current Commonwealth Status (Si) on the first part you do not vote for the second part options. If you consider the number of votes for independence (5%) vs Commonwealth and Statehood you will notice that the overwhelming majority favors annexation to the US.

Some PR historic facts.

1493 On his second voyage Columbus discovers PR. Called Borinquen by the natives. San Juan is the oldest european city in the US.

1513 Juan Ponce de Leon (Governor of Puerto Rico) discovered Florida USA.

1898 the US declared war on Spain and invaded PR. PR was the last Spanish territory in the Americas. Before this PR was a province of Spain.

1917 the US grants US citizenship to all those born in PR.

The Governor of Puerto Rico is the Head of Government of the United States unincorporated territory known officially as the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Since 1948, the Governor has been elected by the people of Puerto Rico. Prior to that date, the Governor of Puerto Rico was appointed by either the King of Spain (1510-1898) or the President of the United States (1898–1948).

Unlike other Latin America countries PR never became an independent country. This was mostly due to Spain's stronghold on the island. Many of the ousted Spanish conquistadores fled to PR for protection. This lead to a strong alliance with Spain.

The PR struggle of the 1950s can be seen on the West Side Story movie (1961). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_xi3KbaRAY&feature=plcp
I strongly recommend the movie.

The majority they got was on a different subject.
