So this WSJ piece on the use of TBS at Heathrow suggests that it has worked in tests and will soon be rolled out across Europe. Apparently it has helped on days with high headwinds by allowing planes to get closer together due to their lower groundspeeds, thereby keeping their landing times separated by the desired number of minutes.

My first thought was of wake turbulence but they say there has been no increase and in any case that they studied wake vortices on high-wind days and found that they dissipate faster.

It also says that the FAA has been studying this since 1996 and still is years from implementation. I'm shocked at the delay. :rolleyes2: :D

I'm curious.. what say you airline guys about this?

I've not read anything other than that WSJ piece about this... What are the legitimate holdups with implementing this in the US (aside from the usual regulatory slowness)? Is there opposition to it here? If so, why?
