I read a little blurb recently that the FAA had relaxed the rules on through the fence operations at municipal airports.

11R has some land a person could build a home on and start a small sky ranch community if they'll allow access to the field. I'll talk to them.

Anyone interested in starting one with me? :)

That would depend entirely on where in the Wild Blue yonder you and (runway? airport?) 11R are. I'm allergic to snow, ice and road salt. BTDT, no more.

11R is in South Central TX. No snow, and the only ice we have around here is Blue Bell ice cream ...

If you like shopping, restaraunts, concerts, and crowds ... this ain't the place for you.

And my business plan is I build a big house with a hangar and you build one near it. But not too close ...

Ummm...have you looked at the aerial photo of the immediate area? No way I'd want to invest/live near that. I love the trailer lots that are strewn with trash and have an extra trailer sitting along the back line with half the roof missing...presumably for parts.

I think 1AR9 has a lot or two open. Nothing like a grass strip in my opinion. Pull up on a persons front yard in an old Bo and talk about the weather and where to go. Have dinner and forget about going out into the stinking garage to look at some dumb car - let's checkout the airplanes in the hangar you can see through the laundry room door!

From what I understand, it's been on a case by case basis. I'm sure it would raise more of an eyebrow to start a through the fence agreement from scratch than it would be to modify an existing agreement. I think for the most part the FAA still frowns on them a little, but mostly from the standpoint that it creates a huge unknown when it comes to future development.

"Hey Ma, have you seen my meth jugs?"

I don't know what you guys are looking at. It's a nice area NorthEast right off the 16 threshold.

Yeah, I assumed that was the "field" you were looking at. It's about the only thing that's "open" in the immediate vicinity of the runway. But on the same side just south of that field is this:

and this:

and (the one I was referring to earlier) this:

Yes, there are also some places that look a bit nicer from the air...but there's still the above (and more like them) in the neighborhood. Then there's the unscreened junkyard just south of that trash.

It might not be so bad if it was hill country, a lot of that trash would be hidden on the other side of the ridge. But this area is relatively flat, where there's nothing to block the view for miles, no thanks.

Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) the neighborhoods around many/most airports aren't the nicest.

I saw a couple trashy looking mobile homes on the southeast side, but the rest of the homes look pretty normal to me. The area to the northeast looks beautiful. Nice green area with a couple small ponds. I dig it, but I'm a small town fella. It ain't no place for city folk, lol. Nice.

I'll put my version of BFE up against yours any day! :goofy:

I live in the boontoolies big time. And, yeah, we have some trailer trash around here too...and meth...plenty of meth...but I don't have to look at it everyday.

Funny thing about Residential through the fence- you'd think aviation folks would be safe neighbors for an airport to have. Problem is, aviation is pretty diverse, and not everyone has the same concept of what's considered acceptable. So the folks living on the 3,200ft strip airport get upset when the county decides to lengthen the runway to 5,000 feet, because now jets will keep them up at night.

...or a flight school decides to offer rotorcraft training and the homeowners suddenly take offense to Robinsons hovering in their backyard for hours at a time.

...or the Medivac base that moves in and runs turbine helicopters day and night.

...or the parachute drop zone that opens up...complete with blaring music all day.

...or the 5am freight operation flying their Caravans over the house.

Private strips are great, even private airparks are nice. A RTTF on a federally obligated airport, to me, is about as much fun as building a house inside a industrial park.

LOL, I feel like you are describing the airport to a T that I fly jumpers at...

What Brad said. Tying your house to a municipal airport is nuts. You want a sandcastle with a runway you better own the whole sandbox.

Agreed.......

POA members will get a nice discount..

Ps.. Wyoming is the most tax and business friendly state in the country...

Even if you don't build anything , the Wyoming address alone will pay for itself in tax savings if you are investment savvy...

Don't you at least need to have a structure to claim residence in a state?

3000' at 8000 MSL is going to be tight for a lot of planes in the summer...

Be a full time job mowing the lawn. Nice place, but there is a lot of work there...

Really nice place...I could handle that!

And...Just depends on what you consider "work." There's about $70k worth of equipment out in the barn and almost every bit of it is "play." The one exception...the log splitter. That's work...but still enjoyable work.

I didn't think it would fly, but threw it out there anyway.

Definitely would want to own the whole enchilada unless the city provided a bunch of stuff...

The closer you get to town, the smaller the lots get and you run into low rent types. You have to get a few miles out....

You guys are making me want to get off my 4 acres and move to a much bigger plot of land. Stop it. LOL
