I had to go to a funeral this morning. I found this out about this man's death last night by a chance reading of the newspaper.

Last week we had some bad weather in the DFW area, including ice storms. There was a little blurb in yesterday's paper about a man being killed in a traffic accident last Wednesday. I recognized the name, and a quick internet search found it was indeed my IT guy, a self employed very nice man that had taken care of my business computer systems until I retired and my personal computers after that. I've known him for over a decade.

He was just a mile from home and got into a chicken**** multiple car pinball fender bender on an icy bridge. No big deal. But he got out of his car and another car came barreling into the scene. He was hit and killed.

He was just 41 years old, married and the father of three children. As I said, a nice man. He loved music, played guitar in a pretty good band. Now I have gone to his funeral because there was a little ice last Wednesday.

I'm sad for his family. I woke up early this morning, pondering the randomness of life and the things over which we have no control. None.

It has been a cold, rainy, grey and dreary day.

In addition to the typical sadness and grief at a funeral under these circumstances, I observed a crushing vignette which greatly magnified the tragedy of this man's death for me.

The sight of tears, hurt, frustration, and anger of a twelve year old girl whose daddy has been taken away from her was heart wrenching.

This ride we're all on together is at times a mess. We can try and not make things any more messy by doing away with discrimination, racism, ethnocentrism, etc. let's educate ourselves, social distance creates conflict. We have enough stuff we all have to deal with in this ride. Blessing to the family friends and loved ones.

Things like this make it damn near impossible to believe in a benevolent, compassionate deity.:confused:

We all have a limited time above ground. Some longer than others. I've known people who lived over a century, and I've known people who only lived a few days. I don't know why it works that way.

We have a chance to be a positive influence in the world and with each other, and some of us are going to do the best we can with the time we have.
