Thank you to all of those that helped celebrate the fly in reopening. I didn't get any pictures because I was too busy playing ground control and tower, talking to the locals, answereing questions, speaking with the press, checking this, checking that, making sure I was the first one to greet the pilots as they landed, etc, etc, etc...

Nick - finally got a longest distance award to make a fly in via GA. 1200 miles and how many hours? Sorry, we don't have a plaque for you like wings, but you did get to be on the 11 o'clock news for it.

Richard - for flying commercial and GA in order to help in the celebration. All this from someone I'd never met until he stepped out of Nick's plane. Way beyond the call of duty!

Jesse - for providing the entertainment. How's that go? Control Shift Colon exclamation point, w q seven? Don't worry, I won't mention the new reporter. Oops!

Barb - also made the news by making 6Y9 her final stop in a major accomplishment. Prickett - Grooms was the final public use aiport in Michigan she landed at. 236 airports, and she's logged all of them, the final one coming on her Birthday, glad we were part of it!

Grant and Leslie - for adding another plane to the ramp and taking the local press up for a ride. Unfortunately I didn't get to talk with you much (same thing happened at Gaston's) - but that just means you'll have to visit again.

Kent - for giving how many locals ride? He said - I will give rides until I get low on fuel - he had 3-1/2 hours of ride giving fuel. Look out Chip, someone's trying to challenge you!

Scott - thanks for bringing another low wing in there, so we didn't have to listen to those high wingers say they had more than we did, and thanks for getting the word out in Chicago.

Dr Bruce - for abondoning his family for 3 hours on Mackinaw Island and dealing with the ensuing grief of doing so when he returned. Glad you could make it there, and I promise next year we will have a longer runway so you can bring the family, and stay a bit longer.

And to those that couldn't make it:

Adam Zucker
Spike Cutler
Anthony Amorosi
Gary Shelby
Bob Ciotti
Chip Gibbons
Bob Bruneau
Michael Driggs and
Mari

For this:

Everyone loved it, and it's already been mounted in the pilots building.

Thanks again to everyone.

Ed and everyone,

Very cool and congratulations on a job well done! Sorry I couldn't make it this weekend. We'll talk later.

Chip

You know what, that was probably the most fun fly in I've ever experienced. Ed Frederick really knows how to take care of company! He offered to let Jesse, Richard and myself use some building on his property that had just been built.

Being the sissies that they are, Jesse and Richard took him up on it, but I figured I had just flown roughly 1200 miles, and brought a tent with me, dangit, I was gonna use it. And I did.

The fly in itself was great, though. Ed counted a total of 11 planes on the field at one time. There were ultralights, twins, Cessnas, and more Pipers than anything!!!!! :D :D :D

Ed took Jesse, Kent and myself out 4-wheeling. That was so much fun, I may go out and buy one myself. Seriously, that was good clean fun. Hold the clean, I'm still dirty from it.

The downside? I didn't get home as planned. The weather took a total crap on us on the way back to Minneapolis and we had to set down and wait it out. We got to blue skies and headed back out, but in the meantime, the route to Albuquerque is blocked. I'm probably gonna try again tomorrow, but realistically, I'm sure I'll be flying commercially back and coming later to get my plane.

Bad ending, but good fly in in general. I got on the news, as did the airfield. Congrats, Ed.

Ed,

Great job! Congratulations on reopening the airport.

I couldn't make it, but I was there is spirit & thought!

I keep hoping I can get up that way.

good work ed. will have to try for next year, sorry...

Excellent Excellent Excellent! I am so glad that things worked out for you Ed. I'm glad you got a good response!!! Glad you like the plaque I only wish I could have been there to present it to you in person.

Congratulations on the re-opening celebration. I would like to have been there but it wasn't in the cards schedule wise.

Richard speaking: We aint sissies, we just smart. We found out Nick hates snakes, y'all can ask him about it. It was simply a fabulous time at 6Y9. The Fredricks are superb hosts.

I had a special thrill from watching an ultralight pilot and also Kent and Grant giving rides to the kids. I thought that was so neat, you should have seen the looks of delight and the excitement from a plane ride those kids will likely remember for a very long time. Even the news reporter had an ear to ear grin after her flight with Grant. Job well done everyone.

See y'all next year.

edit: PS - I have fallen in love with Jesse.

Liz was grinning, wasn't she! I was happy to be able to be a part of it. Thanks for the opportunity, Ed!

Nick made the right choice and decided to leave his airplane in Minneapolis and fly back commercial to New Mexico due to weather. I dropped him off at the airport this morning and he should be back home around 2PM. He will be returning in a few weeks to retrieve his airplane.

Richard will be flying commercial back to California. I will take him to the airport this evening.

I had a lot of fun and will write more later.

PS - I like d00dz

Thanks, Ed, et al, for preserving an aviation resource.

Maybe next year...

Can't wait to see you soon!

I honestly didn't think I'd have nearly this much fun. My idea of this weekend was that we'd have a few planes there and maybe a few locals, we'd cook out and sit around talking about airplanes and such. After all, we only had Brand P and Brand C airplanes there, so why bother flying around, right?

Boy, was I wrong. I got going a little later than I'd hoped, since I wanted to be there in time for the news folks so we'd make a good showing. I arrived at 6Y9 around 11:30. When I overflew the field, I was relieved to see that there were lots of people there, but I didn't see the whole scope of the thing until after I landed. Wow! The entire town showed up! What a great feeling, an aviation-positive and appreciative public celebrating the reopening of their local airport.

Then, when we finally had given everyone a ride who wanted one, Ed, Nick, Jesse and I went four-wheeling in the woods. Man, what a blast. There was some :hairraise: but it was all :goofy: :D.

Then, we ate out and returned to home base to watch the news story, which was really well done. In fact, I sent them a note saying so a few minutes ago.

I had a freakin' blast. Those of you who weren't there have no idea what you missed. Mark your calendars for Labor Day next year! (Though I think some of us are going to return for Labor Day this year...)

Kent - for giving how many locals ride? He said - I will give rides until I get low on fuel - he had 3-1/2 hours of ride giving fuel.

Gotta love the 182. Six hours of fuel, and since I averaged about 148 kts GS on the way up I'd only burned off about an hour and a half. I gave lots of rides and still would have had enough fuel to make it home had I gone straight there.

The most memorable rides:

1) The kids and their mom who I flew over their place about 7 miles east of the field: "Look mom, there's the dogs!"

2) The old (not older, this guy was OLD) guy who used to enjoy flying with his brother-in-law who's now deceased IIRC. He hadn't been in an airplane in 15 or 20 years, and I could see the grinning kid peeking out from inside. :) We flew over his house so he could take a picture too.

3) A little blond girl named Paige, whose grandma rode in the back seat while she rode up in the right seat. There's not a whole lot to see up there, so after we'd flown over town and looked at a few million trees, I was grasping for something that'd be more interesting for her. I saw a small cloud all alone a little ways away, and said "How would you like to fly over that cloud?" What a priceless look of excitement I got from her! We flew towards it and around it while climbing, eventually making it up to 7300 feet to get over the cloud before descending and returning to the field. She really loved it. Ed: Don't forget to let them know I want a copy of the picture of Paige in the plane right after we landed!

What fun, bringing the joy of aviation to others!

I think I'm going to stick the rest of this into another thread... My trip home was great as well, I stopped at quite a few fields to contribute to my quest to win the Wisconsin Airport Challenge.

Ed, thanks again for getting a GA airport reopened, and for a super-fun weekend. :D's all around. :D

I'm back in Albuquerque. Special thanks to Lance F for letting me tie down behind his hangar until I get back up there to rescue Juliet. Also a big thank you to Jesse for giving me a place to crash and taking me to the airport (and for being a pretty damn good pilot, too).

And Ed - I don't think thanking you could possibly be enough, man. You are the bomb.

I second that emotion!

This weekend was way too much fun! While Ed, Nick, Jesse and Kent were four wheeling. Ed's dad took Richard and I on a tour of the country side--UP Chuck's Bar and the Sturgeon River Wilderness area. We almost managed to get a partridge for dinner. Roadkill, mmm, mmm good.

Next year I might have to try one of the four wheelers but what I really want to do is drive Ed's Dad's tractor. He has too many cool implements!

Congrats Ed! Your doing your part to keep GA alive. Sorry I couldn't make it this year.

Well Barb, if you want to help with that 600' extension, it needs to be tilled, and dragged, and...:D

Don't tempt her... she just might!

And not to jack the thread too badly. I noticed Barb finished all public use airports in MI. Do tell, how was Metro?

And Ed congrats on the great weekend. I'll work on the 'no grassies' here and see if I can make it up there too!

Missa

Metro in the middle of the night is a piece of cake. Called Tower and said I wanted in to do a touch and go. He said come on in and stay as long as you want. I just stayed long if enough to roll down about 1000 ft of runway then headed back north. Had to get to 6Y9, ya know, eh!:P

Did you call them before hand and let them know what you were doing? Just curious. Did you get that sea plane base in? or did you just finish all the public use land airports?

I called the tower two weeks ago, just to see when a good time would be. The fella said any day, any time during the night shift (12-6) was good.
I still need to get the seaplane base but have done every public use land airports (excluding heliports-I might be able to get the Tripacer into some of them but I don't think I'd get it back out without a flatbed truck:D )
