Good to know that the authorities and the press know less about cellular technology than they do about aviation.
The 'text messaging' or SMS as it is really called. Will continue to attempt to send the message unitl it goes through successfully.

There is a show running on Discovery this week regarding Hurricane Katrina and the US Coast Guard (SOS Rescue - US Coast Guard) which said many of the rescues were directed via the victims using SMS to contact others who then relayed the message to authorities. While I find little use for SMS, as an emergency aid it at least serves a valid purpose.
Then again, my pager has always seemed to work where most other communications devices fail. It is, however, one way.
