The technology uses infrared sensors to detect and track incoming missiles, then fires a laser beam to jam a heat-seeking missile’s infrared guidance system.

Tests on passenger-carrying flights could begin by the end of the year, says Homeland Security
So they're gonna fire heat seeking missiles at "passenger-carrying flights"?! :hairraise:
What It Does: Using GPS, the system first warns pilots of oncoming obstacles, then assumes control if the pilot fails to take action.
Big Players: Assisted Recovery by Honeywell
Time Frame: Honeywell is now in negotiations with Boeing and Airbus to install the system on commercial planes.
Problems: Pilots are skeptical of a system that they can’t override.
Ya think? Wanna see the video of the Airbus that wouldn't let the pilot pull up?

1. All EL AL airliners are already equipped with that system.

2. "They" already tried several times to launch heat seeking missiles on
Israeli passenger aircraft (including a near-miss in Kenya)

Although it hasn't directly affected any European or US air carriers, a dozen or more commercial aircraft (mostly in embattled areas of the former Soviet Union and Africa) have been hit, and a few lost, to MANPADS (man-portable, shoulder-fired, IR seeker SAM's).

In the mid 1980's I worked on the Airborne Laser Lab (ALL) at Kirtland AFB, NM. We had two modified 707's that we used to test missle defense. Us engineers were in one plane with tracking and telemetry systems. The other plane had a large laser in it. On our command an F15 would fire a missle at the plane with the laser, we would track it and then fire the laser to kill the missle. If we missed we went home and figured out what went wrong. The guys in the other plane, well....:dunno::eek::redface:
