Man was this morning's session at the gym tense.
Got in a little bit early, changed in to the Everlasts and warmed up briefly on the elliptical machine. Hopped a few rope skips and did a few pushups. Stretched on the mat until my hamstrings were loose enough. Jumped on the scale and weighed in. Took a final swig of Gatorade. My turn was up.
I have a theoretical advantage here. I'm outweighed by approximately five pounds, but I have a longer reach, and judging by his performance, I probably have more stamina. Appearances can be deceiving though. What looks like fat can hide muscle. In the end, it comes down to sheer will and determination. That will define the winner.
Oh I've been here before, it's definitely not my first time. I've won some. I've lost some. Just to be still in the game is good enough for me. I had to prove to myself I could still do it. I had to prove to myself I could still be successful at this.
We were squared off. I was tracking his every movement out of the corner of my eye. Acting. Reacting. Sidestepping. Muscles primed. Who will make the first move? A follow up is always easier to counter than an initial hit. But you lose the advantage of first strike. It's like a chess game. You have to think several moves ahead. Make the wrong initial move and you could be in trouble. Employ no strategy and you could be put in check. You train for this endlessly. Physical conditioning, mental conditioning... you study others' techniques. You adapt. You develop your own style. It was time to put all that to the test.
Avoid direct eye contact - yet, use your eyes to deceive your opponent. Try to get him to think you're going one direction then go another. At the same time, read his body language, try to anticipate and be prepared for the unexpected.
Remember to breathe. Don't quit breathing. Don't lose your focus. Don't tense up too much or you won't be able to react in time. What was at most maybe half a minute seemed like eternity. The right time came and he let his guard down.
"'So....... you know anything about canard wings?" I said to the tall, thin Korean girl in a soft voice shortly after he walked off to the drinking fountain.
