I passed my IFR checkride this week and now have a paper temporary airman certificate. Can I use this to fly to Canada, or do I need to wait for my plastic one? Nobody has ever asked for my license (even in Cuba) but I don't want to run into a problem with my temporary one if they ask.

Yes, it's good as long as you're flying a N-Registered airplane.

The only time I've ever been asked for my license is getting back on the ramp from the public side to get to my plane, and that only happened once.

It's a pilot certificate issued by the FAA. The only time a certificate cannot be used outside the US is when the certificate is not recognized by ICAO. for example, Private, Commercial and ATP certificates are recognized under ICAO while Recreational and Sport Pilot certificates are not.

Or if there is an SI involved that limits to US airspace ... such as an SI for Insulin Dependent Diabetes ...

Only person to ask for my certificate was US Customs. Never saw a Canadian customs officer, just talked to them on the phone. YRMV.

I suppose the only person to ask would be FAA , Nav Canada and Customs.

Congrats.

I didn't think you were supposed to leave the country on a temporary airman certificate but I may be getting that confused with the pink temporary aircraft registration.

As others have said, the only time I was asked to see my pilot certificate was when I was coming back into the US from Canada, by the US Customs agent. I've never been asked for the radio operator or station license.
