Tempest Spark Plugs - SB

Thanks for the info. I had all 8 of my plugs replaced with the UREM37BYs during the annual back in early June. Will need to research this to see if mine are in the affected lot.

“Our Commitment to You

For almost two decades, operators and pilots have trusted Tempest spark plugs to perform reliably, flight
after flight. That trust is the foundation of everything we do. We recognize that responsibility, and we
take it seriously.
Our mission is to provide service that exceeds our customers' expectations. That mission is tested most in
moments like this one, and we intend to meet it — through swift action, transparent communication, and
by making this right for every customer affected.”

Except if you have to remove the plugs to determine if cracks exist and none are found, Tempest is giving you nothing for the 1.5-2.0 hours labor. Some commitment to make this right for every customer affected .

2 hours to pull and replace plugs? Dude, work faster.

That's what I was thinking. Even a twin would take 20 minutes max, and that is if they were piping hot.
Removing cowlings and inspecting all 24 plugs and replacing them? Come on man.
That’s less than a minute per plug

You don't need to remove the whole cowling. Get the top off, take the leads off, remove the plugs and immediately reinstall. I was exaggerating the 20 minutes thing but not by much. On a Piper or Cessna 4 cyl, I can remove the top plugs, do compressions, remove bottom plugs, clean gap test, reinstall plugs in less than 2 hours.

Heads up - apparently there is a problem with Tempest plugs manufactured this summer and they may crack. Tempest is offering to replace plugs from certain lots / date codes. More info here:
Good to know, thanks! My pa28 is getting new spark plugs put in during annual, and because champion was sold out we were putting in tempest. Having the shop check and make sure I don't get defects!

A friend had a failure at that location on the plug a few years ago.
According to him, it completely separated and blew a hole through the cowling. He was fairly close so he made it to the runway without a need to divert.
He now gets free plugs for life from Tempest. I don't recall if he said they fixed the cowling or not. (edit: they did)
I'm wondering if it could hit something (ricochet?) like a fuel line, oil line/cooler or anything and cause a worse scenario.

I’ve had 3 since this spring fail. Nice to see this, that said, if their running fine you don’t have an issue, they have all been fine then boom, failed mag check.

Insulation where the plug wire goes in, you can see the arcs.

Well…. Take that back…
I read the SB, and I assume the cracks I’ve seen are not the same, but… maybe it’s related.

I got an idea, you just show up and do this for free for everyone. There are people who pay an AP at $150 a hour to perform inspection that is a result of poor QC by Tempest. If you have plugs in the production run effected, Tempest should be paying to determine if they sold you a defective product. They pay a lot more for a lawsuit from a fatal accident.

I switched to Tempest after Champion purposely decided not to tell pilots about plugs they knew were bad. I’ll stick with Tempest. AOPA

"Reasonable labor costs to remove and replace spark plugs affected by this Service Bulletin and shipping costs to return product will also be reimbursed to the customer."

Only after you removed the plugs and found them defective. If none are found defective, they are paying zero.

Actually, I believe in the paperwork I have there is a reimbursement for mechanic time as well as the plugs themselves. Luckily for me, my 8 were in a box together and probably all the same lot. Checked one by reading the lot code on the hex which was facing up and it is not in the effected lot numbers.
