Telran, ADS-B in 1947

That's cool!! Even in 1947 this system is better than ADSB. No gps single point of failure for the entire system.

Trying to implement all that with vacuum tubes would have been a nightmare. Not to mention the size and power consumption of the on board equipment. The introduction of the transistor in the 1950s is what made possible and popular the VHF COMM radio in small airplanes. Microprocessors in the 1970s made possible airborne Omega and INS systems for the airlines and LORAN C for small aircraft.

GPS is not a single point of failure, it is a multiple redundant system within itself.
Personally I never understood why planes don't have traffic radar sets onboard like on boats.

Boats radar signature is much larger than planes due to the water wake created by the boat which is reflected by the radar beam. A boat in motion is easier to detect than one standing still. Also there is less antenna size restriction on a boat than on airplanes. Many boats carry a radar reflector that looks like a round multiside mirror to enhance their detection at sea.

Re: Teleran, ADS-B in 1947

Have you found out what happened and why it wasn't implemented?

The only thing I've heard is that the VOR system was proposed concurrently and implemented. Part of the legend is that Teleran wouldn't be just at airports, but also dispersed over the countryside like VOR sites. VOR was an incredibly elegant and comparatively simple system for it's time. Which would have made the decision easy even though VOR doesn't offer anything like the features of Teleran. I'll bet RCO capability was added to the VOR's as an afterthought to counter Teleran's weather info.

Wide-Area Multilaterization is available and working today and is a better $ deal than ADS-B by lot$ of dollar$ for transponder-equipped aircraft.

That sounds like older radar.

The latest marine radar technology is what Lowrance is calling broadband radar. http://www.lowrance.com/en-US/Products/Radar/

I think a variant of the Lowrance broadband marine radar could be a nice enhancement for GA aircraft.
