I got an IPAD 2 as a gift this year.

I have never really been able to understand all of the commotion over these devices. I'll admit they are larger than the iphones, which I think are totally a waste of technology. Who cares if you can access the internet from anywhere in the country? A little bit of forethought, and you don't need to spend the extra money on dataplans. Phone, OK. Internet on the run with an itty bitty little screen, not so much.

That being said, this IPAD looks like it could do a little better for me. Although purchasing all of the apps to enjoy it is not pleasant.

I have dowloaded Foreflight, which looks like it could be promising, but I have yet to learn how to use it. Apparently my granddaughter has used them quite a bit, because she grabbed it and downloaded several free games and has usurped it for two days now.

So tell me the magic this unit can do for me tht I have to have and cannot do without.:D

Well, now that you have defined the primary problem, somebody will soon show up with the answer.;)

The user guide isn't a bad place to start. Or just type the flightplan into the box at the upper right and watch the line appear on the map.

Obviously, it provides pleasure to your granddaughter.
And what is more important to life than that?

:yesnod:

I will have 45 "free" downloaded game apps by the time she is finished.
There games and there are games...
I paid $14 for a chess program (the most expensive/sophisticated chess program I could get for the Ipad). It is awesome and comes with a coach if you need one to improve your game. My son claims he improved his game considerably. Last night I was replying the so called game-of-the-century between Bobby Fischer (age 13) and Byrne (from 1956), I replayed it like like 3 times because it is such an unbelievable game, the program comes with the whole library (hundreds) of best games ever played. I got my $14 worth 10 times over, use it every day. I love my Ipad2 and my computer illiterate wife (till she got the Ipad) loves it even more. :D

Do they have a program for those of us who are still trying to figure out checkers?

Dunno, but it is somehow heartening to know that we live in a place where some rube who's stumped by checkers, can still get to9 fly a G-V!

(Cultural note: I am so old that, when I hear the word, "Checkers," I think it should be followed by "Speech."

So apparently, from the looks of things, there are no real must haves in the realm of an IPAD. So what is all the fuss about? Nothing I can't do with a notebook if I really wanted to. It also does not seem to run certain content from certain websites, admittedly made for Windows software. Is there something to allow it to run the Java on the ADDS weather page?

I kidded the apple junkies in my office that it was just an iPhone that you couldn't make phone calls on and was too big to put in your pocket. Then Foreflight came out...

+1 Nailed it. I didn't buy mine until Foreflight came out. I still spend way more time on my iPhone doing "stuff" than on my iPad. The iPad is flight gear.

If santa is real then I'll be getting one for x-mas

Already have foreflight on the Iphone and have been using it on my girlfriend's ipad.

Foreflight rocks.

to plan a route, simply type in the route box your preferred route, separated by spaces You can do something like KTTA LIB KAVL 5000FT 120KTS 12GPH

that will flight plan you from the KTTA airport, to the Liberty VOR, to Asheville airport. it will calculate your time enroute and fuel burn based on current winds aloft along your route at 5000 feet.

I don't get it either.

My daughter, 13, is getting one. I asked her why she wanted the iPad when she already has a PC Laptop. She said "because it's cool". Not to "fit in" with the crowd, but just because "it's cool".

So the answer is, "because it's cool".

Ipad's are great for flying

flying is cool

Ipads are cool

This is like saying I could also haul my family in a pickup if I really wanted.
iPad has numerous advantages (for certain tasks) over a notebook(beyond the cool factor), I suggest you google some articles on the subject. For me just the battery life and portability is super attractive. Also I don't ask can I do this or that on IPad, instead I look what is available for IPad that will get the task done. The value of ipad is in applications specially designed for it. Yeah, it doesn't run FLASH player and I don' think it runs JAVA. Ultimately it is another consumer choice - you decide what's best for you.
