Talk about bad IFR routings over NYC

The NY controllers did that because they are still teed off with that guy that buried the red sox jersey in the new Yankee stadium. You know what they say about payback.

Given the weather, that doesn't really look that bad.

Pilots have been doing that for the last 25 years and AvWeb just discovered the practice?

Yeah - thats old news. .. .

I used to be based at IJD and when it was IFR the winds would be from the E and NE . . . and the GPS approach to IJD IAF'd over HFD VOR. Yet the routing over NY to IJD took me along the CT coast from JFK to GON - then from GON BACK to HFD - then into IJD - it added 15 min of flying.

Whereas the routing to BDL took me JFK/BDR/HFD . . . so I learned when I knew I'd need an approach I'd file to BDL with IJD as my alternate. This way I'd get routed to HFD from JFK and when I contacted BDL Approach I'd simply change my destination to IJD.

Pretty simple.

There is a constant thread on the forums about IFR routings over New York City. Take a look at this routing the Red Sox charter took from Baltimore back to Boston.

I'm not surprised by the routing at all. It's a baseball team charter. They were just thrown a curve, that's all. No different than the basketball team charter flight being given an alley oop followed by a slam dunk into their destination. :)

I was on the ground underneath that weather last night. (Aside -- found a new leak in the roof. ) Maybe they could have been routed over Harrisburg and Binghamton instead of State College and Corning, but that doesn't qualify as abuse of discretion by ATC or the flight deck crew.

Well nobody else may say anything, but that's some funny stuff right there! Thanks for the morning laugh bud. :)

21,000-23,000 feet most of the way. I can just hear that 757 sucking down fuel like a fan drinking beer on a hot day....

Not that bad---they still arrived 1h 13m, less than their original planned 1h 26m, and only 6m more than the last time they flew between the two cities three days prior.

Like others mentioned, weather certainly looked to be a factor.

I can't imagine the wx was that big at deal at FL230/260 . . . even getting to it they would have been in the FL's by the time they got to NJ - there was no severe in that 'clot' of wx. . .

Absolutely it could. Had a similar flight around a line of storms last month, Chicago to Washington National via Toronto. Looking out the window, tops were above us, and we were at FL380. Over, around, through, in that order.

OK then, what were the tops of the weather depicted? That was a cold front that passed through with no shortage of severe weather up and down the east coast.

The NE corridor is extremely congested airspace. When weather passes through, the ARTCC follow different "plays" from their "playbook" to keep traffic moving and minimize delays and cancellations. The dispatcher for the charter may have accepted a westerly routing in lieu of further delays.

I got to enjoy the southern portion of the weather front flying back from Raleigh last night, although I was fortunate to have a much more direct routing: http://flightaware.com/live/flight/N182V

I was basing my idea on the radar over NJ - but - since you guys wanted proof . . .

not a single report of hail or a svr storm over NJ or NY or CT -
http://vortex.plymouth.edu/cgi-bin/wwus60

I'm still looking for the tops reports and precip tops [VIL] and similar reports -

When I used to fly charter out of TEB similar routing to get to JFK, 45 minutes flight time. Stupid and waste of money, but I just did what I was told.
