found this picture in an old soaring magazine last week. This glider is in the club in Ames and that is Jack Trice stadium below full of fans for an Iowa State football game sometime in the mid 1980's. Now the stadium TFR shuts down the airport and no glider or glider towing operations are allowed.

to keep the banner towers away so the stadium can sell more advertising?

Stadiums have TFRs because the stadium owners don't get money from banner tows, so they convinced their corrupt buddies in DC to impose TFRs in the name of security. The public doesn't care because most people are mindless, cowering idiots.

It's stupid to shut down an airport just because it's close to a stadium. I think there is a NASCAR track in the SE that causes that problem. Did not stop POTUS from leaving after the race started.

the airport, like many others in college towns, is within 3 miles of the stadium. airplane traffic is allowed to come and go as long as they are in contact with ATC and squawking. glider operations are specifically prohibited in the wording of the blanket NOTAM

Bam.

There's a pilot on BeechTalk that wanted me to review a video that he made. When I saw it I just about puked.

He made a video that showed a crop duster spraying a stadium. And he made it for his government buddy.

Then he posted a thread on BeechTalk advocating prop locks and admitted that he had a truckload of locks for sale leftover from Katrina. Something like $4M worth of locks.

There are a lot of pricks out there trying to make an easy buck.

Follow the money... Pretty much covers the entire creation of the DHS.

That would be stupid, it isn't done.

True, the airport is not closed, but all the flight schools cannot conduct training, no glider operations, no traffic pattern only ops, and in some cases, no departures with direct contact with ATC, at a non towered airport, that becomes very difficult, essentially closing the airport to any business trying to make a profit.

The glider club at Ames is essentially closed for all home games at the stadium.

I guess I'm confused. What's wrong with a crop duster spraying a stadium? Perhaps they hired him to do so?

The prop lock thing makes no sense. The guy has locks, and is trying to sell them, I'm failing to see the problem?

Actually it was Reagan who landed after the race had started in Daytona.. he didn't leave till way after it was over....

The most recent TFR for the "holy ones" was at Talladega last year when the first and second ladies attended to kiss babies and got boo'd so bad they almost cried... Geez... I wonder why :dunno::dunno::wink2::D

That'll teach 'em!

The issue was that he made the video appear as if a terrorist stole the crop duster and sprayed the stadium to kill the fans. The video was in the "this is how fast bad things can happen" genre and made it clear that that was the message he wanted our government to see.

If he made the video on good knowledge that Al Queefa was making a move then I could see his point. But in my eyes he didn't. What I saw was a man sitting on stack of rusting locks and trying to pawn them off on pilot taxpayers vis-a-vis his government buddy. And to me that's nasty. :nono:

And the reality is that a TFR doesn't even begin to stop this imagined threat at all. I know, I'm preaching to the choir.

A pilot with evil intent can descend 3000 feet in a very short time, a lot shorter time than he would need to travel horizontally 3 miles.

A pilot with an evil attempt could travel 3 miles horizontally in one minute. It makes no difference. The smart pilot would just roll up with a large truck full of explosives and place it in an area with lots of people. Way more effective and they wouldn't have to bang up a perfectly good airplane.

The spraying of the aerosol agent didn't scare me much.... It was the OVERHEAD break in the beginning of the video that had me cowering under my computer desk.:yesnod::yikes::yikes::rofl:

Pu$$y Galore's Flying Circus, from Goldfinger. Pu$$y Galore was portrayed by Honor Blackman, hottest Bond girl ever.

I know that I for one feel much safer knowing that TSA is on the job keeping soda pop and shampoo out of the hands of those who might use them. Gliders can be pretty devastating to a baseball game too.....I think we ought to close the nearby freeways and train stations as well as the airways because you never know when an errant train or truck filled with soap might wash out a game. Think of the horror???????
