[dcpilots] Use Your Aircraft to take Combat Wounded Soldiers to Lunch

---- Got this from the DCPilots forum ------

LOOKING for Pilots - LOOKING for Planes

Use Your Aircraft to take Combat Wounded Soldiers to Lunch
Wings of Appreciation is a group of local pilots who want to show
appreciation to injured soldiers recuperating from their combat injuries. We have
scheduled an event that will take soldiers by plane from Walter Reed
Hospital to Tangier Island for lunch on Saturday, November 13, 2010.
Tangier Island is located in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay at the
Maryland/Virginia state line. The island has about 500 residents and most
residents are watermen making their living in the fishing/crabbing industry.
Transportation on the island is done via bicycle, golf cart, or walking. This
quaint little island has a landing strip (recently repaved, 2,950 foot,
and in great condition) and is a fun and unique destination for a day trip.

Details for Pilots:

To be part of the event you will need to meet at Tipton Airport (KFME) at
10:00 am on Saturday, November 13. We are seeking pilots/aircraft that
are capable of carrying a minimum of 2 passengers.
The wounded soldiers will be transported by bus from Walter Reed Hospital
to Tipton. Once the soldiers arrive at the airport we will load them into
aircraft and expect to depart by 11 am. A Non-Medical Assistant (NMA)
will escort and accompany most soldiers and assist with loading and unloading
the soldier from the aircraft.

Tangier Island (KTGI) is 85 nm from Tipton. Details on preferred routing
will be provided to pilots at a later date.
Once we land on the island, the soldiers and NMAs will be transported to
the restaurant via golf cart – depending on cart capacity pilots may be
asked to walk to the restaurant (approximately a 5-minute walk).
Time and resources permitting, we will give soldiers a fast tour of the
island via the golf cart.

Lunch will be provided for pilots, soldiers, and NMAs. Tangier Island is
noted for crab cakes – and they will be on the lunch menu, as well as
hamburgers, chicken sandwiches, and traditional items.

NOTE: Tipton Airport is within the SFRA. You must at a MINIMUM file a
flight plan with FSS, have a working Transponder, maintain radio communication
with ATC, and receive a unique code from ATC for all flights in, out, or
within the SFRA.

If you would like to be part of this event, as a pilot, support crew, or
to make a financial contribution, please email Wiley Loughran at
_wiley@thoughtlink.com_ (mailto:wiley@thoughtlink.com) or call 703-980-7365.

Email sent. Count me in.

One small point Wiley missed -- you'll also need to have completed the FAA DC SFRA training course available at https://www.faasafety.gov/gslac/ALC/course_content.aspx?cID=55. While it's possible to fly IFR all the way both in and out of both TGI and FME, if you don't pick up/cancel IFR in the air, you'll bring the whole operation to a near-grinding halt for everyone else arriving or departing IFR.

Wow what an awesome mission. I wish I had the funds and plane to participate!! I hope the Wx is CVAU for this!!!

Wiley,

Thanks for helping put this together. Had a great time yesterday and please let me know the next time you need to do this.

Ron,

Thanks for all your hard work arranging this and the great instructions getting to and from FME. Hope you got home in time for your dinner and the spousal unit was not too upset.
