Possibly about to show my weather ignorance but...

I'm checking the weather for an afternoon flight around the patch.

Go for Savannah first.

TAF KSAV 291739Z 2918/3018 26006KT P6SM FEW050 SCT250
FM300000 VRB03KT P6SM SCT040 BKN250
FM301200 04008KT P6SM BKN040 BKN250

Then I click over to KSVN that is 7 miles away and...

TAF
AMD KSVN 2918/3018 23009KT 9999 SCT050 SCT180 QNH2994INS
BECMG 2919/2920 28012KT 9000 -SHRA VCTS BKN030CB OVC050 QNH2987INS
TEMPO 2920/2923 26010G15KT 4800 -TSRA BKN030CB

Nice VFR weather at KSAV to Marginal VFR with thunderbumbers at KSVN 7 miles away. I know, I know look at the FA and the charts for the big picture but I wouldn't expect to see TAFs this different for airports located 7.6nm away. What gives? Are TAFs that accurate?

That's the difference between AF weather forecasters and civilian NWS forecasters. Hunter used to always worse case it compared to SAV. Even though I used SVN for reporting, I knew SAV was the more acurrate.

It does seem that KSVN is always more pessimistic than KSAV.

Yeah when I was stationed at SVN I even asked them during one of our semiannual weather briefs. WX is sometimes quite different than SAV. Just got a reply of basically the difference between AF and NWS.

Civilian vs military. Same thing here with BLV (Scott AFB ) here in the St Louis area.

We get the same thing here in Dayton, with 3 TAF reporting sites in the local flying area - Dayton Intl, Wilmington, and Wright-Patterson AFB. WPAFB is almost ALWAYS more pessimistic than the other two. The others will forecast wind 220/9, ceiling 4000 OVC while WPAFB will be forecasting wing 250/35G50 in thunderstorms.
