Tachometer App

Is there an application that will allow an ipad or an iphone to listen to a single cylinder, 4 stroke engine and reveal its rpm?
I have no experience searching for apps.
Of course, preference would be for a free one; its probably a one-time use.

heck, even one that will work on my winxp laptop would do the trick.

Doubt you'd be able to get enough resolution to provide any meaningful number given all the variables involved.

There are such apps (e.g. helitach) in the radio control world. For a one-off job, however, I'd just record an audio sample and then look at the spectrum in a program like Audacity.

Tried helitach. Not good.
Will lookup audacity. Not sure how to record yet. I can record via video cam, will that work? ie microsoft movie maker. Or I guess the camera can record via qt I think it uses.

I don't think this is going to work (who said that already?), this one is completely discordant with both the car and motorcycle tachs too.
