Sun 'n Fun event adds educational component

The Tom Davis Education Center was dedicated Monday.

This year's Sun 'n Fun Fly-In kicks off Tuesday at Lakeland Linder Regional Airport.

Sun 'n Fun, a not-for-profit organization based in Lakeland, holds its annual Fly-In each April. The event draws more than 160,000 people, 4,000 aircraft, and a lot of tourism dollars to Lakeland.

With 6,000 square feet, the center will provide classroom space and dormitories to house students participating in the Florida Air Museum's summer camps. Up until now, the summer programs have been solely day camps.

The Davis Center will house up to 48 students and two counselors at a time.

The Museum, which holds a state designation as "Florida's aviation museum," teaches students about the heritage of aviation through hands-on projects, lectures and actual flights with certified flight instructors.

The center is named after Tom Davis, founder of Piedmont Airlines and longtime event supporter. Davis was a humanitarian and philanthropist who supported programs that extended opportunities to young people, especially those from disadvantaged families, a release said.
